L.C. proves the Remainder Theorem and the Factor Theorem

I. Objectives
a. explain the Remainder Theorem and the Factor Theorem;
b. determine the remainder when P(x) is divided by (x-r) using Remainder Theorem; and
c. identify when a divisor (x-r) becomes a factor of P(x).
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Remainder Theorem and Factor Theorem
Reference: Mathematic Learner’s Material 10
III. Learning Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
a. Prayer b. Greetings c. Cleanliness of the classroom
B. Lesson Proper
a. Activity I: Review
Divide the (3x3+4x2+8) by (x-2) using long method and synthetic division.
1. What is our dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder?
b. Activity II: Lesson Proper
1. Reveal the subject matter and its definition then prove the Remainder
Theorem.
P(x) = (x – r) ● Q(x) + R
P(r) = (r – r) ● Q(r) + R
P(r) = 0 ● Q(r) + R
P(r) = R
2. Provide examples in finding the remainder when P(x) is divided by (x-r)
using the Remainder Theorem.
i. Find the remainder of (2x2+11x-9) / (2x-3) using Remainder Theorem.
3
First, find the value of r. In this case 𝑟 = . Then substitute the value
2
or r in P(x).
ii. To check whether the result is indeed the remainder, use synthetic
division and compare the results.
iii. Whenever the remainder is 0, it means that (x – r) is a factor of P(x).
iv. Present, define and prove Factor Theorem.
v. Show that (x – 1) is a factor of 3x3-8x2+3x+2 using Factor Theorem.
c. Analysis: Find a Pair!
Activity 5: Applying the Remainder and Factor Theorem, refer to page 76 in
Mathematic Learner’s Material 10.

Use the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder when the given
polynomial is divided by each binomial. Verify your answer using synthetic
division. Indicate whether or not each binomial is a factor of the given
polynomial.
1. P(x) = x3 – 7x + 5
a. x – 1 b. x + 1 c. x – 2
2. P(x) = 2x – 7x +3
3

a. x – 1 b. x + 1 c. x – 2

i. What is the first step in finding the remainder using Remainder

Theorem?
ii. How do we verify our answers?
iii. When do we say that (x – r) is a factor of P(x)?
iv. If (x – r) is a factor of P(x), what is the other factor of P(x)?
d. Abstraction
1. The first step in finding the remainder using Remainder Theorem, is to find
the value of r, then substitute r in P(x).
2. To verify whether our remainder is correct, we can use synthetic division to
identify if we get the same result.
3. When the remainder is 0, that means our divisor (x – r) is a factor of P(x) and
the other factor of P(x) along with (x – r) is the Q(x) since P(x) = (x – r) ● Q(x).
IV. Evaluation
Use the Factor Theorem to determine whether or not the first polynomial is a factor of the
second. Then give the remainder if the second polynomial is divided by the first polynomial.

1. x – 1; x2 + 2x + 5
2. x – 4; 2x3 – 9x2 + 9x – 20
3. y + 3; 2y3 + y2 – 13y + 6
V. Assignment
Answer Activity 8: Factoring Polynomials on page 78 in Mathematic Learner’s Material 10
from 1 up to 5. Copy and answer in your notebook.
