DEVELOPING THE HABIT OF
PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Seven (7) Keys To Developing The Habit Of Personal Growth And Development?
1. DESIRE
2. MOTIVATION
3. GOALS
“He replied…‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow,
and on the third day I will reach my goal.’”
― Luke 13:32(NIV)
2
“We are a goal-seeking organism; our mind works diligently when we visualize what we
are trying to accomplish.”
4. SELF-DISCIPLINE
“SELF-DISCIPLINE means, doing what you should do even if you don’t feel like doing it
until you get used to it.”
READING
“A teacher who doesn’t read is no better off that the student who can’t read.”
“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and
digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon
ASKING
“It’s better to ask questions and look foolish for a minute than not to ask questions in
order to look brilliant and be foolish forever.”
LISTENING / WATCHING
“When I’m doing nothing I’m reading; when I’m doing something not so important
I’m listening or watching.”
EVALUATING / REFLECTING
“Evaluated experiences are among the best teachers not simply having experiences.”

5. TOOLS AND RESOURCES
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get
understanding.”
― Proverbs 4:7 (NIV)
“If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us
realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do
what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
― 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
“Read the Bible every day. Meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do
everything written in it, then your life will become prosperous and successful.”
― Joshua 1:8 (NIV)
6. ASSOCIATION ON PURPOSE
“9 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either
of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one
to help them up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one
keep warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A
cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
― Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

KINDS OF PEOPLE WE MUST SURROUND OURSELVES WITH:
PASSIONATE
OPTILISTIC
SECURE
INSPIRING
TRUSTWORTHY
INQUISITIVE
VALUES-DRIVEN (MORAL)
ENCOURAGER
7. IMMEDIATE OUTLET
“For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his
statutes and rules in Israel.”
― Ezra 7:10 (ESV)
“The best way to maximize learning in attending a seminar or training is to have the goal
of immediately teaching others about what you’ve learned.”
The Benefits Of Having A Goal Of Teaching Someone About What You Have Learned:
5
b. It increases the rate of RETENTION.
2
GAINING STUDENTS’ RESPECT
“Your students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
How can you communicate to your students that you care about them?
c. EMPHATIZE.
d. Listen ATTENTIVELY.
f. Do home VISITATION.
2. Act RESPECTABLY.
You can’t expect others to respect you if you don’t act or behave respectably.”
6
b. Dress APPROPRIATELY;
“They may call you ma’am or sir, greet you good morning, afternoon or evening,
answer you when you ask them, but if you have integrity problem they whisper
silently saying, you are nothing.”
"If I try to use human influence and strategies and tactics of how to get other people
to do what I want, to work better, to be more motivated, to like me and each other -
while my character is fundamentally flawed, marked by duplicity or insincerity - then,
in the long run, I cannot be successful. My duplicity will build distrust, and
everything I do - even using so-called good human relations techniques - will be
perceived as manipulative." (Covey, 1989)
“What gets rewarded gets repeated and what’s not reprimanded gets reprimanded as
well.”
“Disciplining your student is a great way in gaining respect. But the way you discipline
can make or break that respect.”
a. INSTRUCTION;
b. WARNING or PRAISE;
c. EXECUTION;
d. REASSURANCE;
e. IMPARTATION
7
“When you discipline your students to the things they need to do, they will develop the
character they need to become the adults God wants them to be.”
3
BUILDING A HEALTY SELF-ESTEM
“A teacher whose self-esteem is unhealthy will find it difficult to build his or her students’ self-
esteem”
5. PHYSICAL/SEXUAL Abuse;
6. COMPARISON;
7. FALSE Doctrine;
8
1. CRITICAL
2. CONCEITED
3. COWARD
4. SELF-BLAMING/SELF-CONDEMNING
6. UNFULFILLED / UNHAPPY
1. Understand That Your Real Worth As A Person Is Based On How God Sees You.
d. BID – The value of a thing depends on who is willing and how much he is willing to
greatest value.
9
f. INHERENCY – The value of a thing is determined by what it is made of.
3. Embrace SELF-IMPROVEMENT.
Here’s how you can help your students build healthy self-esteem.
ALWAYS…
2. Praise.
NEVER…
3. Say anything negative. Be creative in using positive vocabulary instead of negative words.
10
6. Break your promises.
4
INTEGRATING MORAL VALUES IN EVERY SUBJECT
“The key to a better world – kinder and nicer people, integrity in affairs, dignity and respect for
others, and sacrosanctity of human life – is an education that passes these values from one
generation to the next.”
– Stanford E. Angion
“To educate a person in the mind, but not in morals is to educate a menace to society.”
–Theodore Roosevelt
“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”
– C.S. Lewis
“Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard
duty. Never regard study as duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating
influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the
community to which your later work belongs.”
– Albert Einstein

WHO WAS THE TEACHER WHO MADE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT IMPACT IN
YOUR LIFE THAT MADE YOU OF WHAT YOU ARE TODAY?
• Ethical principles which a person struggles to realize and live (Esteban, 1990)
Biblical Principles God wants us to put high priority upon above other things.
The Basic Human Values (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, 2001, p.23)
Truth
Love
Peace
Right Conduct
Non Violence
12
THE FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES ON INTEGRATING MORAL VALUES IN
EVERY SUBJECT:
2. Values awareness & conviction increases the success rate of values integration;
1. INFORMATION – Knowledge
2. INTERNALIZATION – Understanding/Conceptualization
3. INTEGRATION – Wisdom/Application
The sequence of effective sermon delivery, which is very much applicable in classroom teaching:
1. EXPLANATION
2. ILLUSTRATION
3. APPLICATION

5
TRAINING STUDENTS FOR REAL LIFE SUCCESS
“Every person was born a winner, but in order to win in life,
one must believe he could win and then prepare & train to win.”
It means, doing what you should do even if you don’t feel like doing it until you get used to it.
In order for the students to be self-disciplined, teachers need to impose positive classroom
discipline consistent with the parental discipline at home.
1. INSTRUCTION;
2. WARNING OR PRAISE;
3. EXECUTION;
14
4. REASSURANCE;
5. IMPARTATION.
1. Writing
2. Reading
3. Arithmetic
4. Reasoning
1. INTERPERSONAL Relationship
2. INTRAPERSONAL Relationship
“Many people spend years in schools studying mathematics, biology, anatomy, law,
engineering, arts and science of teaching, philosophy, medicine, and other disciplines,
yet only very few spend time studying themselves”.
3. COMMUNICATION
“The most important lesson you could learn about communication is to seek first to
understand, then to be understood.”
15
“ My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow
to speak and slow to become angry.” - James 1:19
4. PROBLEM SOLVING
“Problems are a normal part of being alive, so get used to it and be very good at solving
it. If a difficulty has no solution, it is not a problem, it’s a fact of life. You just need to
accept it.”
5. CREATIVE THINKING
“If what you will always do is what you have always done what you will always get is
what you have always gotten.”
6. MANAGEMENT
“Management is all about managing in the short term, while developing the plans for the
long term.” - Jack Welch
7. LEADERSHIP
According to Dr. John C. Maxwell, it is INFLUENCE, nothing more, nothing less. And
that everything rises and falls on it.
16
6
INSPIRING THE UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS
2. Tell them of what they could become, revealing to them their own greatness.
“Other people’s opinion of you doesn’t have to be your reality.” – Les Brown’s Teacher
“Sometimes, students need to barrow their teacher’s confidence in them until they
develop their unshakeable confidence in themselves.”
“A dream is an inspiring picture of the future that energizes your mind, will, and
emotions, empowering you to do everything you can, to achieve it.”
- John C. Maxwell
17
c. Words That ENCOURAGE To Keep Going.
"Inspiration and motivation are exactly like nutrition. You have to keep on taking it
daily, in healthy doses. Otherwise, depletion, fatigue, depression and lack of ambition
and achievement will very soon manifest themselves."
- Dr. Jan S. Marais
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
- Proverbs 18:21
“ The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings
healing.” - Proverbs 12:18
"Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be
and he will become as he can and should be." – Goethe

ACTIVATING THE TEACHERS’ MOST VALUABLE TOOL – PRAYER
“5
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have
received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and
pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you.”
2. Pray from the HEART not just from the head (7-8)
“7
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be
heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what
you need before you ask him.”
“9
“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
10
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
“11
Give us today our daily bread.”
19
“3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may
spend what you get on your pleasures.” - James 4:3
5. FORGIVE others (12-15)
“12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not
into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive other people when
they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not
forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins”.
John 14:13-14 “13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may
be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Acts 4:12 “12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven
given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins
and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 2:1 “1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if
anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous
One.”
Mark 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have
received it, and it will be yours.”
Dr. Randolph Byrd, a cardiologist at the San Francisco General Hospital, conducted a research
project with 393 patients who had either had heart attacks or severe chest pains. People were
praying for 50% of these patients in a nearby city, without them being aware of it. It was later
established that those patients who were remembered in prayer had a lower death rate than the
others. These people required less medication, e.g. antibiotics and diuretics; were not connected
to breathing apparatus; and did not have to be intubated. Twelve of the patients who were not
being prayed for, however, required these procedures. This was a statically significant study.*
