INTELLIGENT KEY SYSTEM/ENGINE START FUNCTION
System Diagram INFOID:0000000003375580
JMKIA3682GB
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
• The engine start function of Intelligent Key system is a system that makes it possible to start and stop the
engine without removing the key. It verifies the electronic ID using two-way communications when pressing
the push-button ignition switch while carrying the Intelligent Key, which operates based on the results of
electronic ID verification for Intelligent Key using two-way communications between the Intelligent Key and
the vehicle.
NOTE:
The driver should carry the Intelligent Key at all times.
• Intelligent Key has 2 IDs [for Intelligent Key and for NVIS (NATS)]. It can perform the door lock/unlock oper-
ation and the push-button ignition switch operation when the registered Intelligent Key is carried.
• When the Intelligent Key battery is discharged, it can be used as emergency back-up by inserting the Intelli-
gent Key to the key slot. At that time, perform the NVIS (NATS) ID verification. If it is used when the Intelli-
gent Key is carried, perform the Intelligent Key ID verification.
• If the ID is successfully verified, and when push-button ignition switch is pressed, steering lock will be
released and initiating the engine will be possible.
1. When the push-button ignition switch is pressed, the BCM signals the inside key antenna and transmits
the request signal to the Intelligent Key.
F
2. The Intelligent Key receives the request signal and transmits the Intelligent Key ID signal to the BCM via
the remote keyless entry receiver.
3. The Intelligent Key receives the Intelligent Key ID signal and verifies it with the registered ID.
G
4. BCM transmits the steering lock unlock signal to steering lock unit and IPDM E/R if the verification results
are OK.
5. IPDM E/R turns the steering lock relay ON and supplies power to the steering lock unit.
H
6. Release of the steering lock.
7. BCM transmits the power supply stop signal to IPDM E/R when it confirms that the steering lock is in the
unlock condition.
I
8. IPDM E/R turns the steering lock relay OFF and stops power supply to the steering lock unit.
9. BCM turns ACC relay ON and transmits the ignition power supply ON signal to IPDM E/R.
10. IPDM E/R turns the ignition relay ON and starts the ignition power supply. J
11. BCM confirms that the shift position is P or N.
12. BCM transmits the starter request signal via CAN communication to IPDM E/R and turns the starter relay
in IPDM E/R ON if BCM judges that the engine start condition is satisfied. SEC
13. IPDM E/R turns the starter control relay ON when receiving the starter request signal.
14. Battery power is supplied through the starter relay and the starter control relay to operate the starter motor
and to start the cranking. L
CAUTION:
If a malfunction is detected in the Intelligent Key system, the “KEY” warning lamp in the combina-
tion meter illuminates. At that time, the engine cannot be started.
M
15. When BCM received feedback signal from ECM acknowledging the engine has been initiated, the BCM
transmits a stop signal to IPDM E/R and stops the cranking by turning OFF the starter motor relay. (If the
engine initiating has failed, the cranking will stop automatically within 5 seconds.)
CAUTION: N
When the Intelligent Key is carried outside of the vehicle (inside key antenna detection area) with
the power supply in ACC or ON position, even if the engine start condition* is satisfied, the engine
cannot be started. O
*: For the engine start condition, refer to “PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION SWITCH OPERATION PROCEDURE”.
OPERATION RANGE
Engine can be started when Intelligent Key is inside the vehicle. However, sometimes engine might not start P
when Intelligent Key is on instrument panel or in glove box.
OPERATION WHEN KEY SLOT IS USED
When the Intelligent Key battery is discharged, it performs the NVIS (NATS) ID verification between the inte-
grated transponder and BCM by inserting the Intelligent Key into the key slot, and then the engine can be
started.
For details relating to starting the engine using key slot, refer to SEC-18, "System Description".

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
• The NVIS (NATS) is an anti-theft system by registering an Intelligent Key ID in to the vehicle and prevents
the engine being started by an unregistered Intelligent Key. It has a higher protection against auto thefts that
duplicate mechanical key.
• It performs the ID verification when starting the engine in the same way as the Intelligent Key system. But, it
performs the NVIS (NATS) ID verification when inserting the Intelligent Key and performs the Intelligent Key
ID verification when carrying the Intelligent Key.
• The mechanical key integrated in the Intelligent Key cannot start the engine. When the Intelligent Key bat-
tery is discharged, the NVIS (NATS) ID verification memorized to the transponder integrated with Intelligent
Key is performed by inserting the Intelligent Key into the key slot. If the verification results are OK, the
engine start operation can be performed by the push-button ignition switch operation.
• Locate the security indicator and apply the anti-theft system equipment sticker, forewarn that the NVIS
(NATS) is onboard with the model.
• Security indicator lamp always blinks when the power supply position is in any position except the ON posi-
tion.
• Intelligent Key can be registered up to 4 keys (Including the standard ignition key) on request from the
owner.

PRECAUTION A
PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT B
PRE-TENSIONER" INFOID:0000000003566321
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along C
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted. D
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the “SRS AIRBAG” and “SEAT BELT” of this
Service Manual.
WARNING: E
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
F
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see the “SRS AIRBAG”.
• Never use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this Ser- G
vice Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness
connectors.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS H
When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors while ignition switch is
ON or engine is running, never use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer.
Heavy vibration may activate the sensor(s), deploy the airbag(s), possibly cause serious injury. I
When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always turn OFF ignition switch, disconnect the battery,
and wait 3 minutes or more before performing any service.
Precaution for Procedure without Cowl Top Cover INFOID:0000000003566325 J
When performing the procedure after removing cowl top cover, cover
the lower end of windshield with urethane, etc. SEC
PIIB3706J
NOTE:
O
• Before removing and installing any control units, first turn the push-button ignition switch to the LOCK posi-
tion, then disconnect both battery cables.
• After finishing work, confirm that all control unit connectors are connected properly, then re-connect both
battery cables. P
• Always use CONSULT-III to perform self-diagnosis as a part of each function inspection after finishing work.
If a DTC is detected, perform trouble diagnosis according to self-diagnosis results.
This vehicle is equipped with a push-button ignition switch and a steering lock unit.
If the battery is disconnected or discharged, the steering wheel will lock and cannot be turned.
If turning the steering wheel is required with the battery disconnected or discharged, follow the procedure

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
• The NVIS (NATS) is an anti-theft system by registering an key ID in to the vehicle and prevents the engine
being started by an unregistered keyfob. It has a higher protection against auto thefts that duplicate mechan-
ical key.
• It performs the NVIS (NATS) ID verification when inserting the keyfob into the key slot and performs the key
ID verification.
• The mechanical key integrated in the keyfob can not start the engine. When the keyfob battery is dis-
charged, the NVIS (NATS) ID verification memorized to the transponder integrated with keyfob is performed
by inserting the keyfob into the key slot. If the verification results are OK, the engine start operation can be
performed by the push-button ignition switch operation.
• Locate the security indicator and apply the anti-theft system equipment sticker, forewarn that the NVIS
(NATS) is onboard with the model.
• Security indicator always blinks when the power supply position is in any position except the ON position.
• Keyfob can be registered up to 4 keys (Including the standard ignition key) on request from the owner.

BCM : Description INFOID:0000000003465923
CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time applications. It is an on-vehicle mul-
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Modern
vehicle is equipped with many electronic control unit, and each control unit shares information and links with
other control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are connected
with 2 communication lines (CAN H-line, CAN L-line) allowing a high rate of information transmission with less
wiring. Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.

PRECAUTION
PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT
PRE-TENSIONER" INFOID:0000000003566322
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the “SRS AIRBAG” and “SEAT BELT” of this
Service Manual.
WARNING:
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see the “SRS AIRBAG”.
• Never use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this Ser-
vice Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or harness
connectors.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS
When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors while ignition switch is
ON or engine is running, never use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a hammer.
Heavy vibration may activate the sensor(s), deploy the airbag(s), possibly cause serious injury.
When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always turn OFF ignition switch, disconnect the battery,
and wait 3 minutes or more before performing any service.
Precaution for Procedure without Cowl Top Cover INFOID:0000000003566326
When performing the procedure after removing cowl top cover, cover
the lower end of windshield with urethane, etc.
PIIB3706J
NOTE:
• Before removing and installing any control units, first turn the push-button ignition switch to the LOCK posi-
tion, then disconnect both battery cables.
• After finishing work, confirm that all control unit connectors are connected properly, then re-connect both
battery cables.
If turning the steering wheel is required with the battery disconnected or discharged, follow the procedure
below before starting the repair operation.
