ARNIS

Arnis is considered as an extreme martial art technique which includes

weapon teaching like solo baston (training in single stick), doble baston (double
stick) and technique espada y daga (stick and knife blade training).

The two brothers who should be given credit for the development of Arnis
in the Philippines are Remy and Ernesto Presas. The father of Modern Arnis is
Remy Presas. He wrote the first book in Arnis that is considered as the “bible”
among physical education teachers.
When the Spaniards began colonizing the Philippines, they saw an
already developed weapons-based martial arts practice by the natives.

WHAT IS THE NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF ARNIS?

Arnis is only known as a traditional Filipino martial art. Its origin in the
culture and history of the Filipino people is still unknown. It remains unclear
because there are no written documents. It is believed that the Spaniards
destroyed and prohibited the practice of martial arts. During the Spanish time,
this kind of self-defense or art of fighting involves the use of the following: one
stick, paired stick, a long and short stick, and a sharp weapon. These were used
even before the Spaniards came to the Philippines.

Lapulapu is known to be the first master of Arnis because he fought and

won the battle with Magellan and his men not with a hail of bullets but with
wooden instruments, spears and bolos. Even though the Spanish soldiers had
more weapons, they were unsuccessful and their weapons were useless. With
the wooden arms of Lapulapu and his warriors, Magellan lost that battle at the
same time losing his own life.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi had recognized the skills of the Filipinos in martial
arts and in stick and sword fighting. Some evidence showed that the Filipinos
were also using the art of Arnis in some stage plays like Moro-moro and some
Muslim dances even before the Spaniards ruled the Philippines.
Arnes de mano came to be known by this term due to its Spanish
influence. The term originated from the Spanish word arnes, which means
“trappings” or “defensive armor.”
Arnis was declared as the Philippine National Martial Art and Sport on Dec
11, 2009 through Republic Act 9850 signed by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
As per R.A 9850, the official adoption of Arnis as the national martial art and
sport shall be promulgated by inscribing the symbol of Arnis in the official seal of
the Philippine Sports Commission and by making it the first competition to be
played by participating teams on the first day of the annual Palarong
Pambansa. The Philippine Sports Commission is the leading agency to
implement the provisions of this act.

WHAT IS THE PROPER GRIP AND COURTESY IN ARNIS?

three inches away from the base of the baston or stick. The thumb is over the
forefinger. You should have a firm grip or hold on the baston when striking it.
