Minister of Finance, Indonesia: Sri Mulyani Indrawati
Sri Mulyani Indrawati is an Indonesian economist, who currently serves as the Minister of
Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, a position she has held since July 2016. She returned to
this role after serving as the World Bank's Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer,
where she was responsible for the Bank's operations around the world. In this capacity, Sri
Mulyani often represented the World Bank Group at the G20. She also chaired the
International Development Association (IDA)− the World Bank's fund for the poorest
countries.
Prior to joining the World Bank in 2010, she served as the Minister of Finance of the
Republic of Indonesia from 2005 to 2010, in addition to being the Coordinating Minister of
Economic Affairs from 2008 to 2009. She was also the Minister of National Development
Planning from 2004 to 2005.
In 2006, Sri Mulyani was named the “Finance Minister of the Year” from Euromoney
magazine and the “Best Finance Minister in Asia” from Emerging Market Forum. Recently,
she won the “Best Minister Award” at the Sixth Annual Gathering of the World Government
Summit 2018 in Dubai, UAE. The nomination process to this prestigious award was done by
the Summit’s Knowledge Partner “Ernst & Young” based on a multi-dimensional approach
and extensive research to cross check the candidate’s track records and history of high impact
achievements. The winner selection of the “Best Minister Award” was the result of voting of
five independent global judges from renowned public and private sector organizations.
Her previous professional experience included the Executive Director at the International
Monetary Fund representing Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and Vietnam from 2002 to 2004. In academic
life, Sri Mulyani has been a faculty member at Universitas Indonesia since 1986 and was a
visiting professor at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at the Georgia State
University, U.S.A. (2001-2002).
Sri Mulyani earned a Ph.D. in economics (1992) and M.S. in economics (1990) from the
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, U.S.A. and a B.A. in economics (1986) from
Universitas Indonesia.
This specialist of Monetary Economy and Banking as well as Labor Economics research was chosen to be the
Executive Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF) representing 12 countries in the South East Asia (SEA
Group) at the beginning of October 2002. Starting from November 1, 2002, she represented 12 member countries of
SEA Group at International Monetary Funds.
On December 5, 2005, she was appointed to serve as the Minister of Finance. During her devotion as the Minister of
Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati achieved many achievements, such as stabilizing macroeconomy, maintaining prudent
fiscal policy, decreasing cost of loan and managing debt as well as creating trust to investors.
Minister of Finance’s reform was led by her very well. Hence, it created many fundamental changes in the Ministry of
Finance. On September 18, 2006, Sri Mulyani was crowned as the best Minister of Finance in Asia by the Emerging
Markets in the sidelines of World Bank and IMF’s Annual Session in Singapore.
She was also elected as the 23rd world’s most influencing woman from Forbes magazine in 2008 and the 2nd most
influencing woman in Indonesia from Globe Asia magazine in October 2007. Sri Mulyani was also awarded as the best
Minister of Finance for 2006 from the Euromoney and the best Minister of Finance in Asia by the Emerging Market
Forum on the same year.
In 2008, she served as the Acting Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs after the Coordinating Minister for
Economic Affairs Dr. Boediono was inaugurated as the Governor of Bank Indonesia. Then she was appointed as the
Executive Director of World Bank commencing on June 1, 2010.
On July 27th, 2016, President Joko Widodo inaugurated Sri Mulyani Indrawati as the Minister of Finance in his
Working Cabinet. On February 11th, 2018, the World Government Summit has announced her as the best minister in
the world.
