CHAPTER I
THE PROJECT AND ITS BACKGROUND
Augmented reality is a technology that works on computer vision-based
recognition algorithms to augment sound, video, graphics and other sensor-
based inputs on real world objects using the camera of your device. It is a
good way to render real world information and present it in an interactive way
so that virtual elements become part of the real world.
Current developments show that in the area of implementation of
augmented reality applications gives countless opportunities for development
are available. The fact that objects and additional information in augmented
reality applications are accessible in an illustrative manner. Because of these
possibilities ideas on promoting and advertisements on tourism industry rises.
The city of Sta. Cruz Laguna has plenty of historical places and even
establishments that is very well known by the residents of the city and the
tourists but they don’t know what does it looks like before and what is its
historical background.
The use of augmented reality will give the user an experience of
historical information in the form text and 3D models that as might as well give
them entertainment. From the new establishments, roads, places back to its
old forms and appearances.
Project Context
Sta. Cruz is a 1st class urban municipality in the province of Laguna,
Philippines. It is also the capital town of the province of Laguna. The
researchers wants to promote tourism of Sta. Cruz in terms of its historical
information using augmented reality. The general problem of the study is how
to create an application that will promote tourism. Specifically, the researchers
would want to answer (1) How to create an application that will give historical
background of Sta. Cruz’ places. (2) How to create an application that can
entertain tourists of Sta. Cruz. (3) And how to develop an application that will
create a new way to attract more tourist in Sta. Cruz.
Purpose and Description

The purpose of this study is to provide an application that can be used by
the tourists and also the residents on touring the city of Sta. Cruz. The
application will give a brief historical background of a specific
establishment/place and give its previous appearance. The application will not
need internet connection for the detection of the picked establishment/place
hence the camera of the smartphone or the device will be used for detection.
There will be two features for viewing the historical pictures of the
places/spots, first live is the live mode and the other is the offline mode. In the
live mode feature, the user will able to view the its historical appearance by
going to the location of the place and detect it there while the offline mode
gives the user a chance to preview the place without going on the site.
Objectives of the Study

The general objective is to develop a system to promote tourism of Sta.
Cruz in terms of its historical information using augmented reality. (1) to
create an application that will give historical background of Sta. Cruz’ places.
(2) to create an application that can entertain tourists of Sta. Cruz. (3) And
how to develop an application that will create a new way to attract more tourist
in Sta. Cruz.

Significance of the Study
Significance of the study shows the persons that will benefit from the
application “Age of Sta. Cruz – Augmented Reality” by the
developers/proponents. And about how they will benefit from the study of the
proponents.
 Municipality of Sta. Cruz– will attract more tourist and may also open
new opportunities of investments. The history of specific
establishments/places will be promoted and will make known.
 Residents & tourists of Sta. Cruz- will have better knowledge of what
Sta. Cruz has been in the past years and what does it looks like.
 Researchers – the researchers will gain more knowledge and
experience about this study or to any thing that can be related to this
study.
 Future Researchers – they will gain a first-hand knowledge about this
kind of study
Scope and Limitations
The proposed application “Age of Sta. Cruz- Augmented Reality” is
made for the municipality of Sta. Cruz only. This section explains about the
scope and limitation of the project fully understand the possible opportunities
and restrictions of the study.
The following will be the scope of the study:
 The application provides a historical background of specific sites
 The application provides a visual representation of previous
appearance of establishments/places
 The application provides a map of available places to be visited.
These are the limitations of this study:
 The application cannot provide historical backgrounds and visual
representations of other municipalities.
 The application does not provide a navigation on the mapping feature.
