Developing GPS-Based Application for Navigation and Security Enhancement of DMLMHS Campus|2
A. Rationale
GPS, also known as the Global Positioning System, has a lot of apps that are being used
worldwide by the community in terms of transportation, tourism, and many more. These apps
are mainly Google Maps, Waze, Here WeGo, Sygic GPS Navigation, and Maps. The public
uses GPS for the purpose of providing an accurate location for most areas of the earth.
Google Maps is known to be the most widely used GPS app for providing a wide range of
places to locate in times of need. This web mapping service is available in the form of a
software application developed by Google that provides in-depth information about sites and
regions around the world. On the other hand, these applications are mostly used for existing
roads and are unable to provide routes inside malls and campuses. (Verma, 2020)
Nowadays, traditional maps posted for school grounds are not updated due to constant
renovations and transfers of room advisers due to different reasons that make the displayed
maps untrustworthy. Additionally, for many students, a large proportion of their daily
happenings locating a specific place may influence their ability and willingness to spend time
on campus or to participate in campus activities or events. (Baker, 2021) Also when people
request directions, school faculties or security personnel are often unavailable to accompany
or guide them to their desired location due to other responsibilities that staff must fulfill.
Smartphones are making big changes in our lives these days. In this modern era, the number
of mobile phone users has been growing expeditiously across all economic and age
categories. University students have been identified as one of the largest and most active
The most popular operating system for smart devices is Android which is an open
source software and offers developers a free platform to make their applications. (Heyeon,
2012) Google shares Android's code for free, but most Android devices use both free and
special software, like what Google needs for its services. The open nature of Android has led
to a large community of developers and enthusiasts who use the free code to create new
features for advanced users or to install Android on devices that originally used a different
operating system. (Haile, 2023) That is why researchers are inspired to develop an
application for cell phones specifically for Android and iOS users to assist users in
determining the shortest path between two points of interest on campus. Additionally,
existing navigation apps for campuses need an internet connection for the app to work and
lack an indoor option. That is why this research aims to create an app specifically for the
DMLMHS campus with offline options to provide accessibility despite having no internet
connection. As the project progresses, researchers are to engage with the school community
to gather feedback and insights, ensuring that the app's features and design align with the
users' needs and preferences. By prioritizing collaboration with campus officials. Moreover,
it will explore the challenges and limitations of existing offline campus navigation
applications, along with potential solutions to address these limitations. (Sparsh, 2023)
The app that the researchers aim to develop aims to enhance the navigation system
within the DMLMHS campus, as it will be able to guide its users anywhere inside the
campus. This GPS app will be of great benefit to parents, visitors, and newcomers, such as
first-year students who are still unfamiliar with the directions inside the school. This app will
also include a “safety button,” which, as the name suggests, is used for emergencies. When
this “safety button” is triggered, the app will immediately notify the main server along with
your location, and whoever triggered the button will have immediate assistance. Not only
that, the application will also provide the benefit of being able to locate the used device for
the app wherever it is lost, as long as it is inside the premises of the school, but it also
depends on whether the location is on and the options for the online version are used. To sum
up, everything that has been stated, this app is designed to be a “multifunctional” application
that will be of great benefit to the school. This way, the convenience of our campuses will be
ensured, and it will also serve as an encouragement to other researchers to apply the
country's tourism.
B. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
\
1. How can we create a user-friendly mobile app that helps people easily navigate
around the DMLMHS campus using their Android phones and GPS technology?
2. What is the impact of real-time location tracking and offline support in the app on
3. How do people at DMLMHS feel about the app's event features, and how can we

E. Goals/Expected Outcomes
The goal of developing a GPS app for the DMLMHS campus is to improve campus
navigation, particularly for students, parents, visitors, and newcomers, by providing accurate
directions and maps for indoor and offline use. Additionally, the app prioritizes safety,
offering a "safety button" for emergency assistance and device location tracking within the
school premises. User satisfaction is a key focus, with engagement from the school
community to ensure the app aligns with their needs and preferences.

GPS app developers face risks, such as data theft and code theft. Data theft can happen when
user info is stolen or lost. Code theft can happen when someone copies the app's code without
permission. To lower these risks, developers should take steps to protect user data and their
own intellectual property. For example, they can use strong passwords and copyright their
code. By taking these steps, developers can help protect themselves and their users.
