Churchill Complex Variables 8e: Section 8 - Exercise 8 Page 1 of 1

Exercise 8
Prove that two nonzero complex numbers z1 and z2 have the same moduli if and only if there are
complex numbers c1 and c2 such that z1 = c1 c2 and z2 = c1c2.
Suggestion: Note that

θ 1 + θ2 θ1 − θ 2
exp i exp i = exp(iθ1 )
2 2
and
θ1 + θ2 θ1 − θ 2
exp i exp i = exp(iθ2 ).

Solution

Suppose that there are two nonzero complex numbers, z1 and z2 ,

z1 = r1 eiθ1 z2 = r2 eiθ2
and that they have the same moduli.
|z1 | = |z2 | → |r1 eiθ1 | = |r2 eiθ2 | → r1 = r2
If we choose c1 and c2 to be

θ1 + θ2
c1 = r1 exp i
2

θ1 − θ2
c2 = exp i ,
2
then

θ1 + θ2 θ1 − θ 2
z1 = c1 c2 = r1 exp i exp i = r1 eiθ1
2 2

θ 1 + θ2 θ1 − θ2
z2 = c1c2 = r1 exp i exp i = r1 eiθ2 = r2 eiθ2 .
2 2
The first part of the proof is complete. Suppose now that there exist complex numbers, c1 and c2 ,
such that z1 = c1 c2 and z2 = c1c2. The aim is to show that z1 and z2 have the same moduli. If we
have
c1 = a1 + ib1
c2 = a2 + ib2 ,
then
z1 = c1 c2 = (a1 + ib1 )(a2 + ib2 ) = a1 a2 − b1 b2 + i(a1 b2 + a2 b1 )
z2 = c1c2 = (a1 + ib1 )(a2 − ib2 ) = a1 a2 + b1 b2 + i(−a1 b2 + a2 b1 ),
and the magnitudes are
p q
|z1 | = (a1 a2 − b1 b2 ) + (a1 b2 + a2 b1 ) = a21 a22 + a22 b21 + a21 b22 + b21 b22
2 2

p q
|z2 | = (a1 a2 + b1 b2 ) + (−a1 b2 + a2 b1 ) = a21 a22 + a22 b21 + a21 b22 + b21 b22

in fact equal. Therefore, two nonzero complex numbers, z1 and z2 , have the same moduli if and
only if there are complex numbers, c1 and c2 , such that z1 = c1 c2 and z2 = c1c2.
