Digital Marketing Seminar Reflection Paper

November 13, 2019

The seminar which was held on the 13th of November 2019, entitled “Digital Marketing Seminar” was
participated by students and lecturers with a total of 100 people. We had the honour of welcoming our
speaker, Puan Nor Hasyimah binti Mohamad Arif, co-founder and managing director of Malaya Grill
to talk about how she marketed her business from scratch. In reflection on my experience in the Digital
Marketing Seminar program, I have gained clarity that it is vitally important to adopt digitalized
technology in our marketing technique in order to stay relevant and for our brand to be recognized. Our
speaker started off her speech by telling us how Malaya Grill was first founded in 2014 with her husband
and only began using enterprise in 2016. At the time, they were the only ones who were doing catering
for “kambing golek”. She further continued to explain that she had to take up the role as administrative
executive, sales executive, marketing executive and operational executive all at once due to lack of staff
during her start up business. However, she believed everyone starts from nothing and so she took classes
for Photoshop and Facebook marketing. We also revisited one of the 4P’s concept which is promotion.
The speaker emphasized how important branding and positioning is in a business and disclosed that she
had to do the branding for Malaya Grill five times before the logo was finalized. Besides that, she
enlightened us on the IPR concept which is an acronym for inform (product awareness), persuade
(copywriting) and remind (advertisements). The speaker also explained to us on the VUCA era which
is an acronym for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity where everything is in the tip of our
fingers. Then she continued to explain how digital marketing is done which the first step is copywriting.
Copywriting translates the use of format in producing content. Also, YouTube and Google are better
for marketing because it has less traffic, however we can still find demand from selected segments like
baby boomers and Gen Y from Facebook. I have also learned that the more we do live videos to market
our products, the better our proficiency in speaking will be. The point is, we need drive, motivation,
mentors and goals in order to pursue digital marketing to its fullest. I now have a better understanding
of the importance in assessing the market and making sure our brand gets noticed by new customers.
This can be achieved through increasing SEO organically by applying GoogleAds, Google Forms,
Google Maps and MyBusiness. This is to ensure our brand comes up in one of the top google search
results. People don’t usually look for the brand name but instead they type in keywords like “where can
I find is the best “kambing golek?”. Our brand is considered successful in brand positioning if we come
out in the top results because it is very hard to achieve. I also gained a new understanding that in order
to reflect a high quality brand, we need to ensure that the pictures or visuals of our products also reflect
our image like minding the angles, filters, editing applications, to make sure we remain relevant and
competitive in the market. Lastly, we proceeded with a Q&A session where she expressed the real life
troubles she faced from people buying her domain website and tried to sell it to her at an unreasonably
high price to dealing with unsatisfied customers. She expressed that it’s not necessary to turn off
comments or shutting down the customers bad reviews. Instead, find a way to compromise with them
or giving them incentives as a way to apologize. On a positive note, she shared her plans to join Store
Hub to conduct e-commerce there and redirect those that needs the consultation on the catering to the
WhatsApp and their newest digital development in their physical store is customers using Store Hub to
access the menu, pay, and choose the time to come and the food will be ready to serve. I really
appreciated learning from the experiences of business pioneers about the work they did and the
challenges they overcome by applying digital marketing. It provided me with a sense of how customer
relationship management works and also the importance of taking advantage of the digital technologies
in marketing products.
