PODCAST PLAN

MY VERSE SHALL STAND

RACHEL ONG, OCTOBER 9, 2019

DESCRIPTION
Join us each week as we explore different works of classic literature!
Together we will take a brief dive into books, plays, and poems in
order to understand their themes and how they affect us. Our goal is
to help our listeners cultivate a deeper appreciation of these long-
standing texts.

TITLE OF PODCAST
My Verse Shall Stand: An Exploration of Classic Literature

PODCAST TOPIC

This podcast is focused on the discussion of various works of

literature, both poetry and prose.

GENRE OF PODCAST

My podcast would probably fall under the genre of Education, given

that it is focused on literature, and more specifically the ideas
contained in said literature. You could also make the case that it
belongs in the category of Society and Culture, since the literature of
any given time and place is a product of that period’s culture.
Studying these texts can give us very good insight into both their
authors and their original audiences.

DESCRIPTION OF HOST

I will be hosting the show on my own, but I will be bringing guests

on regularly. If I could find someone to agree to co-host it with me, I
would gladly have them, since the premise for this podcast is to have
discussions about literature, and it’s always important to hear more
than one perspective.

I am an avid reader with a passion for continually learning new

things, and I want to share my love for literature and discussion with
others.

ESTIMATED LENGTH OF SHOW

If I were to be producing this podcast for real, I would want it to be

at least 60 minutes but probably no longer than 90. This would allow
for enough time to allow the discussion to develop without being too
much for the audience to digest in one sitting. The length might vary
by about 5-10 minutes for each show since the idea is to let the
discussion flow naturally for the most part.

PROPOSED FREQUENCY OF SHOW

I would probably produce this podcast weekly or biweekly. Since the

format of the show requires little planning or scripting, it would make
it easier to record episodes fairly frequently. I would want the whole
discussion to remain mostly uncut as well, so the whole process
would also involve slightly less editing. There are also a lot of good
books and poems out there, even if we restrict ourselves to the
undisputed classics, and we’re going to have to move at a pretty
good clip if we want to get through them all!

2
PODCAST FORMAT STRUCTURE

1. Intro music with greeting

2. Introduction of text (title, author, context of publication)
3. Discuss/critique the writing (genre, style)
4. Discuss content (themes, ideas, imagery, plot, etc.)
5. Recommended Read
6. Wrap up / preview of next show
7. Outro with music

I believe that this format provides a good logical flow to the topics:
moving from the specific details and structure of each piece to its
deeper or more central ideas. The Recommended Read is meant to
be a very brief segment where I suggest a work of literature to add
to your reading list, encouraging people to engage with the classics.
By letting listeners know what text we will be discussing in the next
episode, it provides them with something to look forward to, as well
as giving them the option to take a look at the actual text
beforehand, if they so choose.

SCRIPT VS OUTLINE

I would choose to use a loose/flexible outline rather than a script. I

want the discussions to feel and flow like a natural conversation. I
would definitely invite guests to participate regularly, because there
is always a benefit on hearing a new perspective on a text. This goes
along with my reasoning for wanting to have more than one host if
possible.

COVER IMAGE

The cover image is a stylized still life of some desk or other surface
meant for reading and writing, obviously related to literature. The
“old fashioned” or “vintage” quality of all the items reflect this
podcast’s specific focus on classic literature. They are also meant to

evoke a cozy and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, representing the
fact that the discussions ought to be comfortable to the listener,
which the warm, muted colors are also intended to achieve. The tea
in particular is meant to emphasize the social and inviting aspect of
what we are doing.
