•Gas carburizing (Hydrocarbon/Endothermic gas)
3Fe +[C] Fe3C
A thermo-chemical reaction carried out at high temperature
•Industrial practices

1. Hydrocarbon feed into pit type furnaces

2. Endothermic gas in sealed quench furnaces

FURNACE VALIDATION FOR

CARBURIZING PROCESS

9 samples, as mentioned in
the sketch, are to be cut
and checked for case
depth.
If all readings are found
within 0.05mm the furnace
condition is suitable for
uniform carburizing process
hence it is validated.
This exercise should be
repeated every 6 months.

SAFETY FIRST ( LEARNING FROM PAST)

Level of quenching oil should be up to the mark.

Quenching oil bath should be free from water content.

Unburnt gas is dangerous, always maintain pilot flame.

Quenching process to be carried out on generator supply.

CO is very hazardous gas.

Endothermic gas is explosive below 750 ⁰C.
