DESCRIPTION
This document provides specification, installation and operational information for a
Battery Temperature Probe Concentrator Module (TXM), Part No. 521211.

LPS, LXP, VMS and VPS Power Systems can be operated in conjunction with a battery
temperature probe. With the probe installed and connected, the power system is
designed to automatically increase or decrease output voltage as battery temperature
decreases or increases, respectively. This maintains an optimum charge voltage to the
battery with respect to temperature, thereby extending battery life.

The TXM expands the Power System’s battery-monitoring capabilities by providing a

means of monitoring up to eight (8) temperature probes. The TXM provides two isolated
analog outputs for VMS and one digital output for LPS, LXP, and VPS applications.

In VMS applications, the TXM can be user-adjusted to allow the power system to
compensate according to the hottest probe, the average temperature of all connected
probes, or the probe connected to the lowest numbered connector. When using the TXM
with an LPS, LXP, or VPS system, these same functions are available by programming
the power system’s MCA.

The TXM provides local and remote alarms circuits to indicate a failure condition in the
TXM or to indicate that no probes are connected.

The TXM is designed to operate with any +24V or –48V LPS, LXP, VMS, or VPS Power
System that accepts a Battery Temperature Probe.

INSTALLATION
Safety Statement

DANGER: Installation of this equipment should only be performed by a qualified

installer following approved safety procedures.

This equipment is used in conjunction with batteries. Batteries are an

energy source that can produce high amounts of electrical current.
NEVER allow a metal object, such as a tool, to contact more than one
termination at a time, or to simultaneously contact a termination and a
grounded object. Even a momentary short circuit can cause an
explosion resulting in injury. To avoid such short circuits and injury:
• Wear eye protection at all times.
• Remove watches, bracelets, and rings.
• Use only tools having insulated handles.
• If insulated tools are not available, completely cover tool handles
with a minimum of three half-lapped layers of electrical tape.
• Ensure that wrenches with more than one working end have only
one end exposed.
User Selections

Output Mode Selection (VMS Applications Only)

Note: When using the TXM with an LPS, LXP, or VPS Power System, the compensation
mode is selected using the Power System’s MCA commands. Refer to the power
system documentation for a selection procedure.

When using the TXM with a VMS system, one of three available TXM compensation
modes may be selected by setting a rotary switch. See Figure 2 for switch location.
Unless otherwise specified, the switch is factory set to Position No. 1. Refer to Table 1
and verify the setting, or adjust the mode switch as required.

Mounting

Mounting the TXM

The TXM can be mounted on a wall or other surface by using the two mounting holes
provided. Refer to Figure 1 for mounting hole location and size. The TXM must be
protected from the weather. It is recommended that the TXM be mounted so that the
STATUS indicator LED is visible.

Mounting the Battery Temperature Probes

Danger: Read the Safety Statement at the beginning of the Installation section
before mounting the probe.

Battery temperature probes are ordered via the documentation provided with the power
system. Use the following mounting guidelines.

Part No. 521262: Mount this probe on the negative terminal of the battery, using the
hardware that connects the battery cable or busbar link. The mounting hole clears 5/16”
hardware. Torque hardware to battery manufacturer’s recommendations.

Part Nos. 101145 and 101146: Offered with the Model V40CAB only. Mounts on or
near the battery. The mounting hole clears #10 hardware.

Electrical Connections
Refer to Figure 2 for connector locations.

Probe and Interface connections are made by means of locking-plug type connectors.

Power and alarm connections are made to terminal block TB1. TB1 provides screw
compression type terminals, which accept a wire size of 28-16 AWG. Strip 1/4" of
insulation from each lead; insert the lead in the wire cavity and tighten the screw.
Recommended torque is 2 in. lbs.

Wiring can be secured by applying a plastic cable tie through an anchor provided next to
the terminal block.

Input Power

Note: Observe correct polarity. Provide an external 1-1/3A fuse in the ungrounded input
lead.

1) Connect positive (+) battery to terminal 1 of TB1.

2) Connect negative (–) battery to terminal 2 of TB1.

External Fail Alarm

Alarm contacts are rated for 0.5A at 125VAC, 1A at 30VDC, and 0.3A at 110VDC.

Note: Do not apply voltages higher than 42.4 volts AC (peak) or 60 volts DC.

Part No. 521211 (TXM) Issue AB, November 17, 2004

In the event of an alarm condition, a closed loop circuit will be provided between
terminals 3 and 4 of terminal block TB1, and an open loop circuit will be provided
between terminals 4 and 5 of TB1.

Probes

Plug the Battery Temperature Probe(s) into connectors J1-J8 on the TXM. Probe
locations can be recorded on the label provided on the TXM.

Interface Connection to the Power System

a) LPS, LXP, VPS

Refer to the Power System documentation for probe connector location.

Connect one end of an interface cable into connector J9 on the TXM, and the
other end into the battery temperature probe port on the Power System.

b) VMS

Refer to the VMS Power System documentation for probe connector location.

1) Connect one end of an interface cable into connector J10 on the TXM,
and the other end into the battery temperature probe port on the Power
System.

2) If a second VMS Power System is connected in parallel with the first,

connect one end of an interface cable into connector J11 on the TXM,
and the other end into the battery temperature probe port on the second
Power System.

Initially Starting and Checking Operation

After all electrical connections have been made and verified, perform the following
procedures to start and verify TXM operation.

Initial Startup

1) With the Power System operating, verify that the STATUS LED on the TXM is
illuminated GREEN. If the STATUS LED does not illuminate, check for correct
voltage and polarity at terminals 1 and 2 of TB1 on the TXM. If the STATUS LED
illuminates RED, ensure that at least one temperature probe is connected to the
TXM.

2) Verify Power System output voltage is as required by the temperature of the

battery. Refer to the Power System documentation for details.

Checking the Fail Alarm

1) Unplug all temperature probes from the TXM.

a) Requirement: The STATUS LED illuminates RED.

b) Requirement: External fail alarms activate (if connected).

c) Requirement: Power System output voltage switches to a default setting of

approximately 54.48 volts DC.

2) Plug all temperature probes into the TXM.

a) Requirement: The STATUS LED illuminates GREEN.

b) Requirement: External fail alarms reset (if connected).

c) Requirement: Control of Power System output voltage is returned to

temperature probe(s) (see Power System documentation).

Final Step

This completes the installation and checkout of the TXM.

applications (see User Selections), no adjustment of the TXM is required or provided.
Refer to the Power System documentation for all Power System adjustment procedures.

TROUBLESHOOTING AND REPAIR

Note: Refer to the Power System documentation for troubleshooting possible Power
System or Battery Temperature Probe failures.

The TXM contains no user-replaceable parts. No attempt should be made to open or

repair the TXM. If repair is required, contact Emerson Network Power.

The STATUS LED on the TXM indicates possible trouble conditions in the TXM.

• STATUS LED Does Not Illuminate: Check for proper input voltage (18-60VDC)
and polarity at terminals 1 (+) and 2 (–) of TB1 on the TXM. Correct as required.
If indicator still does not illuminate, a fault in the TXM is indicated.

• STATUS LED illuminates RED: Check to ensure that at least one temperature
probe is connected to the TXM. If indicator still illuminates red, a fault in the TXM
is indicated.

• STATUS LED illuminates GREEN: Normal operation is indicated.
