1. LOUIS SULLIVAN “ Form follows function”
- Allows for ornamentation as long as it serves a function. Still, modernism in

architecture emerged from both principles. Its goal was to determine the form
of a building solely from functional requirements and not traditional aesthetics.
This shows that the structure and function go hand in hand and a disruption in
one of the component can lead to failure of another.
2. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT “I believe in God any I spell it nature”
- Wright prefers to say that nature is the only body of God that we shall ever
see. If we wish to know the truth concerning anything, we'll find it in the nature
of that thing. The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief
in a thing makes it happen. Wright believed that nature’s secrets could only be
discovered by diligent contemplation. Reality and truth were not to be found on
the surface of things, but required extensive probing and thought to yield
valuable, that’s why he asks for people to study nature, love nature and stay
with nature.
3. ANTONIO GAUDI “ Form does not necessarily follows function”
-If an architect can make sense of a place, it should make life in the city more
pleasurable and comfortable, and help people figure out where they are.
Buildings convey meaning, whether they are meant to or not, so it makes
sense that buildings be designed to indicate their use. It can be pleasing yet
functionable without relation the form into its function.
4. LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE “Less is more”
-Less is more is a precept of modern architecture and minimalism. It is

associated with functional designs that are reduced to their necessary
elements in an expression of extreme simplicity.

-The house is being used for living. But when people are involved in the
commercial, can you tell that the function of the commercial building is
residential? So, Louis said, what should be the function of the structure to be

contribute to the pure beauty or function of an object or space.

-The debate about functionalism and aesthetics is often framed as a mutually

exclusive choice. A new slight addition to this new wave of functionalism was
that not only should buildings and houses be designed around the purpose of
functionality, architecture should also be used as a means to physically create
a better world and a better life for people in the broadest sense.
9. EERO SAARINEN “Function influence but does not dictate form”
-A new perspective on the relations between form and function suggest that
sometimes structure can follow form. Thus, the construction of the building
depends on many other issues, such as culture, landscape and the desire of
the client, of course.
It the times of Sullivan, progress and functionalism were the core principles of
modernism. These days, the form and function of a building can influence each
other or even go separately. It all depends on different factors and if we look
around, we will see that numerous buildings that were built for definite
purposes are used for completely different aims.
10. KENZO TANGE “Modern architecture need not to be western”
-Kenzo Tange advocated the progress of architecture through permitting a way

to young architects to their expression. If the expression of reality is
considered modernism, then the architectural expression of a shift from an
agrarian to an industrial to an information-based society and culture must also
be a type of modernism.
