POKHARA UNIVERSITY
Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2005
Programme: BE Full Marks: 100 Course: Probability and Statistics Time : 3hrs. Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable. The figures in the margin indicate full marks. Attempt all the questions.
1. a) Represent the following data by means of Histogram, frequency curve 7
and frequency polygon. Wages: 10-15 15-20 20-25 25-30 30-40 40-60 60-80 No. of worker: 7 19 28 15 12 12 8 b) A factory produces two types of electric bulbs A and B. In an 8 experiment relating to their life, the following results were obtained. Length of life (hours) No. of bulb (A) No. of bulb (B) 500-700 5 4 700-900 11 30 900-1100 26 12 1100-1300 10 8 1300-1500 8 6 Compare the variability of the life of the two types of bulbs using coefficient of variation. 2. a) Define complementary event. For two events, A and B, 7 Prove that: P (Ā B) = P (B) – P (A B). b) A consignment of 15 pens contains 2 defective pens. Two pens are 8 taken at random from the consignment without replacement. What is the probability that i) both are defective ii)both are non-defective 3. a) Define mathematical expectation of a discrete random variable. The 7 probability distribution for the number of defective items (x) is a sample of 4 is as follows: X: 0 1 2 3 4 P(X): .35 .39 .19 .06 .01 Calculate the expected value, variance and standard deviation for x. b) A telephone exchange receives on an average 4 calls per minutes. 8 Find the probability on the basis of Poisson distribution of i) no call at all ii) 2 or less call per minute iii) upto 4 calls per minute iv) more than 4 call per minute 4. a) The distribution of the wages of the employees in a firm was perfectly 8 normal and the number of workers employed in the organization was 4000. The mean and standard deviation were calculated as Rs. 800 and Rs. 200 respectively. On the basis of the information estimate i) The number of workers getting salary between Rs. 700 and Rs. 900. ii) % of workers getting salary between Rs. 700 and 900. iii) % of workers getting salary above Rs. 1000. b) Define joint probability density function. If the joint probability 7 density of two random variables is given by f (x1, x2) = 6 e -2x1 – 3x2 for x1 > 0, x2 > 0. =0 else where. Find i) Marginal density function of x and y. ii) Are x1 and x2 independent? 5. a) A potential buyer of light bulbs bought 50 bulbs of each of two brands 7 upon testing these bulbs, he found that Brand A has a mean life of 1282 hours with a standard deviation of 80 hrs whereas B had a mean life of 1208 hrs with a standard deviation of 94 hrs can the buyers be quite certain that the two brands differ in quality? b) Experience shows that a fixed dose of a certain drug causes an 8 average increase of pulse rate of 10 beats per minute. A group of 9 patients given the same dose showed the following increase 13, 15, 14, 10, 8, 12, 16, 9, 20 Test at 5% level of significance whether this group is different in response to the drug? OR a) 1000 articles from factory A are examined and found to contain 3% 7 defective. 1500 similar articles from factory B are found to contain only 2% defectives. Would you conclude that the products of factory B are superior to the factory A? b) Memory capacity of a student was tested before and after training. Is 8 the difference between the memory capacity of the students significant? Roll No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Before 10 15 9 3 7 12 16 17 4 Training After 12 17 8 5 6 11 18 20 3 training 6. a) Define interval estimation. A random sample of 100 patients 7 suffering from a certain disease was given serum treatment. It was observed that 75% were released of the disease. Find 95% confidence limit for the % of patient cured. b) Calculate the coefficient of correlation from the following marks 8 obtained by 10 students in mathematics (x) and Statistics (y). X 40 65 60 25 85 35 45 70 80 55 Y 30 85 65 35 90 35 55 75 75 45 Also obtain the regression equation of y on x. 7.
