Most SOPs would probably begin with the words “Ever since I can remember, I have wanted….” However, I pride
myself on my rectitude, and would like to share that until I was 15 I had no clue what I wanted to do. Then I realized
and completed my B.Tech in electrical and electronics engineering and then M.E. in electrical engineering.
However, my area of study is not related with the environment but then also I am very concerned to know more
about our environment and also interested to improve the situation of current environmental conditions. I am used to
the simple things, like clear blue skies, gushing streams, and air redolent with freshly cut grass. But due to pollution
our environment becomes like a rotten pot-pourri of dark grey clouds of smoke, tonnes of garbage, torrid rivers of
sewage and noisome garbage heap. This situation of environment struck a chord and made me realize that our
environment is slowly heading to the point of no return, and unless we do something about it, it will be too late.
Several attempts have been made to remedy the appalling environmental situation, but they are being done by taking
in to consideration only a smidgeon of factors which are prevalent in the system. It is my goal to aid in our
understanding of environmental pollution on a global scale by not only researching the fate and transport of
contaminants, but also by analyzing how our current philosophies and policies affect these problems. In support of
my goal I decided to opt for Environmental science and Engineering as my PhD programme.
A PhD in environmental science and engineering can provide me with the platform to further improve and
ultimately refine my knowledge and skills in my areas of interest. It will also serve to give direction to my goal of
career as a professional at a research-oriented organization that provides solutions to a whole gamut of
environmental problems ranging from risk analysis of a prospective establishment to the design of an efficient water
supply system and waste treatment system.
I have also had the opportunity to present papers at international conference sponsored by Springer. My papers are
“Short-term hydrothermal scheduling using grey wolf optimization” and “short-term hydrothermal
scheduling using various bio-inspired algorithms: a review”.
I like to think of myself as an enthusiastic and competitive young go-getter, who is capable of rising up to the
challenges that may arise. For me, the idea of PhD study from IIT seems like an excellent opportunity to experience
a new atmosphere of research. The prospect of studying in IIT Bombay which has a rich blend of students of
different ethnic origins and traditions truly excites me.
I bring with me an undying aptitude for research. It is my firm belief that in order to achieve greater things in life, a
master’s degree is not sufficient. In this rapidly progressing world, higher knowledge, wider exposure to practical
experience, and involvement in more extensive research are essential to the development of a well-rounded
engineer. IIT Bombay is well known for its research in the field of Environmental Management which also happens
to be my area of interest. Further academic training in Environmental Engineering and Management would enable
me to best realize my scientific potential and I hence look at your institute to provide with an opportunity to pursue
my PhD studies.
