Level 3 - Write an essay

It's important for all young people to take an active part in team sports.
It teaches them useful skills for their adult life. Do you agree or disagree
with this statement? Write about 250 words.

Sport and life skills

1. Begin by deciding whether you agree or disagree with the

statement and think up three or four reasons to support your
opinion.

The following ideas may help you:

agree - team sport helps develop responsibility, fitness, competitiveness,

cooperation

disagree - can achieve these through individual sports, school work, being
in a family

2. Plan your essay carefully.

Use paragraphs to separate out ideas. You will probably need to use three
or four different paragraphs here. Look at the following essay plan and
decide if you could use it.

paragraph one - disagree with statement

paragraph two - list reasons above

paragraph three - say why sport is important for general health

paragraph four - say something about your own routine and sport, and
draw a simple conclusion

3. Try to use some of the following vocabulary and expressions in

your essay:

Sport and life skills

I disagree with the statement that all young people need to participate in
team sports.

In my opinion, there are many other ways they can learn the skills they
need for adult life. You can learn self-discipline and a sense of
responsibility by playing golf or by being a long-distance runner. Neither
of these are team sports. You don't need to be an athlete, to take part in
races or run around on a football pitch to learn to be competitive or a
good loser. You can do this by playing cards or board games. These are
not sports. They are hobbies. It is not necessary to be on a sports ground
to learn team skills either. You can learn those by working with classmates
on school projects or just by sharing a home with brothers and sisters.

However, I do believe that it is important for young people to do some

kind of regular sport. This is because we spend a lot of our time studying
or sitting in front of a computer. If your town has a leisure centre or a
sports field, this will be easier to organise.

gym or to the local swimming pool. I also enjoy playing tennis against
my brother. There is a tennis court next to our block of flats and we often
play there in the evenings. I am lucky to live in a community where there
are many possibilities for young people to do sport if they want to. But it
is also important to remember that doing a lot of sport does not mean
you will grow into a responsible adult! Life is not that simple.

Note

The words in bold in the model essays are topic vocabulary that you can
learn by looking them up in the Word Banks or in the Longman Essential
Activator. Try and use these words when writing about these particular
topics. In addition, typical phrases and expressions are underlined in some
essays to show you how to link your sentences or paragraphs.
