Aim:To prepare:
(a) A mixture
(b) A compound
Using iron filings and sulphur powder and distinguish between these on the basis of:
(i) Appearance, i.e., homogeneity and heterogeneity.
(ii) behaviour towards a magnet.
(iii) behaviour towards carbon disulphide (a solvent)
(iv) effect of heat
Materials required:iron filings and sulphur powder, carbon disulphide, magnet, a hard glass
test tube, china dish, burner, wire gauge, test tube holder, tongs, etc.
Theory:
Mixture: When two or more pure substances (element, compound or both) are
mixed together in any proportion do not undergo any change is called mixture.
Properties of mixtures:
(a)Mixture may be homogeneous or heterogeneous.
(b) The properties of constituents retain in the mixture.
(c) In the mixture the constituents present in any ratio.
Compound:A pure substance which is formed by the two or more elements
combined together chemically in a fixed proportion by is called compound.
Properties of compounds:
(a) Compounds are always homogeneous in nature.
(b) The properties of a compound are entirely different from its constituents.
(c) The constituents are always present in fixed proportion by mass.
Observation Table:
(i) For mixture (Fe + S):
