FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE

(Baiju Padman, ADH (AP), 03625-R)

1. In aviation, Foreign Object Damage (FOD) is any article or substance alien to an

aircraft or system which could potentially cause damage. FOD can be internal or
external. The term FOD is used to describe both external FOD hazards like bird shields,
hail, sand storms or objects left on the runway/dispersal and internal FOD hazards
which includes items left in the cockpit that interface with flight safety by getting
tangled in control cables, Jam many parts or short out electrical connections etc. There
is a major FOD, is Tool FOD. Tool FOD is a serious hazard caused by tools left inside
the aircraft after manufacturing/servicing by aircraft maintenance team. Usually aircraft
maintenance teams have strict tool control procedures like tagging the tool with a serial
number to make sure that all tools have been removed from an aircraft before its
release for flight. Some examples of major FODs are as follows:-

a) Aircraft parts, rocks, broken pavement

b) Parts of ground vehicles
c) Garbage, Maintenance tools etc.
d) Hail
e) Ice on the wing
f) Bird collisions
g) Dust

2. All aircrafts may occasionally loose small parts during takeoff and landing. These
parts remain on the runway and can be cause damage to tires of other aircraft, hit the
fuselage, canopy or engine. Some technologies, information, methods helpful in
preventing FODs are mentioned below:-

a) Daily FOD Walk/FOD Parade

b) Aerospace tool control system
c) FOD prevention programme manuals
d) Magnetic bars
e) Promotional and awareness materials
f) Two behind sweeper
g) Training materials
h) Vacuum truck sweeper
j) Walk behind sweeper
