LIFESTYLE AND EXPERIENCES OF STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

Korean drama or K-drama refers to televised dramas in Korean language, made in

South Korea, mostly in a miniseries format, with distinctive features that set it apart from

regular Western television series or soap operas. Korean dramas can be set in

contemporary times or in historical settings, the Korean word for the latter being sageuk.

(definition.com).Throughout the years Korean dramas has large influenced in Philippine

society especially to the youth. In the year 2003, Korean drama began airing in the

Philippines with the first Korean Drama,‘Bright Girl’ in GMA 7 that was dubbed in

Tagalog. GMA 7 aired it to beat the chinovela ‘Meteor Garden,’ but unfortunately, due to

the high ratings and popularity of ‘Meteor Garden, ’‘Bright Girl’ didn’t make the wave

and got low ratings. After GMA 7 failed the airing of first Korean drama, the network

tried to air K-Dramas again for the second time. The network bought the rights of

‘Endless Love: Autumn in my Heart’ (2003), which is the first installment of a five-part

series revolving around the season. At this point, the network achieved the success, and

‘Endless Love: Autumn in my Heart’ is considered as the genesis of the koreanovela

phenomenon in the Philippines. GMA 7 continues the koreanovela craze by airing the

second installment of ‘Endless Love,’ ‘Winter Sonata.’ Once again, the Filipinos were

attracted to this drama by its storyline and dramatic climax. ABS-CBN then followed the

path. Until now Korean Drama has a big influenced to the Filipino youth and began to

adapt Korean culture and Lifestyle.

LIFESTYLE AND EXPERIENCES OF STUDENTS

The Kdrama craze are all over the world and the population of Korean Drama

fans have been grow throughout the years because of this popularity of Kdrama, Filipino

teenager students are also into it. Most of the students in the Philippines become so

addicted in Korean Drama this teenager students are awake for the whole night for the

sake of finishing the whole series. These students are risking their health and giving a lot

of attention to this other than reading books and doing school works.

The experiences and lifestyle of the students who habitually watch Korean drama

is truly important. Their experiences and lifestyle has a large impact to their future, as

they grow older there will be a lot of changes to their lifestyle and their perspective on

how people should live in.

In the Philippines, the popularity of Korean drama have been grow and it also

have a wide influenced in culture, fashion and also in terms of their language. Filipino

teenagers tend to follow their culture. For example, this students go to Korean

LIFESTYLE AND EXPERIENCES OF STUDENTS

The significance of this study is to know the experiences and lifestyle of those

students who habitually watch Korean drama that aims to educate their bad habits on it.

However, for those students who are now into watching Korean drama it is also

important to inform them their limitations on watching on it.

In able to link with the objectives of this study, the researchers reviewed a related

literature to further understand the phenomenon.

Tobing, Y. (2011) claimed that Korean dramas have an interesting story and fun

to watch. Korean drama also preferred for teenagers and youths. The teenagers love

Korean Drama because they can watch their favorite actors or actresses. Korean drama is

the best popular drama in Asia, more than Indonesian drama.

Korean drama or K-Drama refers to television drama in the Korean language. The

Korean drama is made in South Korea, and mostly in a miniseries format with distinctive

features that set it a part from regular Western television series or soap operas. Korean

drama can set in contemporary times or in historical settings, and we can say it with

sageuk. Different genres apply to these two types, from romantic comedies and action

series to fusion science fiction dramas.

You usually know about the positive impact of watching Korean drama, but the

Korean drama can give you the negative impacts. If you always watch the Korean drama

and

forget to study, you will not focus on studying the lesson, because you like to watch it

everyday. The another negative impact is in the culture. Now, many people like you

forget about our culture. For example, many teenagers wear Korean’s fashion. Korean

dramas also make you spend your money easier. If you want to watch it, you need a lot of

money to using internet.

In another literature, Clarinda, V. (2007) wrote that Korean drama has become

one of the most favorite entertainment in Indonesia. But some of Indonesians still not

know how Korean drama can be a famous in Indonesia. It is started when South Korea

became the host in 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea-Japan, and South Korea became the

successful host. After the World Cup, there is many countries came to South Korea and

covered that moment and everything about South Korea. After that, most of all television

in the world showed everything about South Korea especially Korean drama and after all

Korean drama became famous in this world and Indonesia too. Korean drama is really

famous in Indonesia. The first Korean drama show in Indonesia that was aired is Endless

Love. That drama becomes popular in Indonesia, so another drama comes to Indonesia

like Boys Over Flowers, Princess Hours, Full House, and Winter Sonata.

Basically, there are three genres in Korean drama. They are romance, action, and

comedy drama. Romance drama is the most favorite genre for the teenagers and youths,

because there are many romantic scenes in Korean drama. It makes the teenagers and

youths like Korean drama, so they become happy to watch the drama and they are always

waiting for the next romantic scenes. They hope that it will be happen in the real life.

Action drama gives exciting sense for they who like action movie. There are some

actions we can see in this film. When the peoples watch action drama, it makes the

audience become nervous. The other reason is when the actor acts the action scene, the

actor looks so cool, brave, and gentle. Comedy drama gives the humor sense for the

audience, and it makes people laugh and it will be the funny entertainment.

Other literature deals with the positive and negative effects of Kdrama to students

but this study is not focus on the effects of kdrama to students. In the current study

students who always watch kdrama will be the participants to analyze and to understand

their action towards their lifestyle and experiences in watching Kdrama. This study is

unique in a such way that it will understand their action. The study finds

its individuation and novelty within the field of analysis in such the simplest way that

its sensible use could also be a nice contribution within the area wherever the study is

being conducted. The participants are distinctive and therefore the purpose of this study is

equally unique.

This study aims to know the lifestyle and experiences of students who are

habitually watch kdrama with the help of questionnaire and also to support the study.

Specifically, to know more about this study with this following concerns:

The respondents will be selected by the use of purposive sampling. A purposive

sample is a non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study. This type of sampling can be very useful in

situations when you need to reach a targeted sample quickly, and where sampling for

proportionality is not the main concern (Ashley Crossman, 2017). The 30 students will

be selected by purposive sampling who have been watching Kdrama in most of the time.

This is a must for the answers can be more specific and credible with such experience.

For the instrument, the study will employ a semi-structured interview guide for

the selected students. The interview guide is a list of questions you will ask to your

participants during the interviews. A semi-structured interview is a qualitative method of

inquiry that combines a pre-determined set of open questions with opportunity for the

interviewer to explore particular themes or response further (Janet Water 2012). For the

interview guide questions the researchers will conduct an interview for every student who

always watch Korean drama. This study will employ 3 experts in the field to validate the

instrument or the interview guide questions.

permission to conduct a face to face interview and the interview will be guided in their

vacant period.

Nowadays, research ethics is very important and strictly prohibited. Education

Institution have been practicing ethics consideration. Other than various fields it also

important to considered human rights and protection, particularly those relating children,

women, and other vulnerable members of the society, as part of the research process.

In the study, the above mention ethical considerations are preserved. Since the

participants are all minors, personal and parental consents to participate in the study were

secured. Clarification of informed consents and voluntary and non-monetary declaration

of participation will be done.

Although valuable information of the respondents are indicated in this research

for purposes of participants’ qualifications such as their important information like their
