FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 2

ABSTRACT

In an ever changing technological world, computers seem to be at the forefront of Education, most
notably, Facebook have become famous today because users can friend and follow others they
know or like and keep up with the events going on in their lives and it became a part of the daily
routine for most individuals. The main purpose of this paper is to trace the relationship of Facebook
usage toward student’s academic performance. The researchers wanted to identify ways of
minimizing the bad impacts of Facebook to students and to show the negative effects of this social
networking site on students’ behavior and performance. The research is utilizing qualitative
method technique more specifically data mining. Data mining is the practice of examining large
databases in order to generate new information, about extrapolating patterns and new knowledge
from the data you’ve already collected. This research has revealed that students were likely to be
affected by social media, especially Facebook. It is indicated that most students would prefer to
use social media and spend many hours checking social media sites. Therefore, educators and
parents need to be concerned and try to find better ways and means to solve these problems.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

The creation and developments of infrastructure and technological innovations into

countries have always been the great opportunities for socio-economic and political life of

human beings. Every technological innovation has been an over the top topic of debate and

center of researchers’ attention and such as the case with the development of social networking

sites. Various researchers have conducted studies to pinpoint the several impacts of these sites on

their users and findings suggested both positive and negative aspects. Hence, many countries

gained open access to the Internet due to rapid advances in information technology within last

twenty years (Kuppuswamy& Narayan, 2010).

In an ever changing technological world, computers seem to be at the forefront of

Education, most notably, Facebook have become famous today because users can friend and

follow others they know or like and keep up with the events going on in their lives and it became

a part of the daily routine for most individuals. It is the major social network in the world where

people are able to share communication and information with each other to an extent. The

number of active users on Facebook have grown tremendously each day and most notably each

month and year. Today’s college students (which consist of Generation Y or also named

Millennial) are exposed to all types of technologies in many aspects of their lives (Browning,

Gerlich, &Westermann, 2011). On a daily basis they use desktop computers, laptops, E-readers,

tablets, and cell phones to actively engage in social networking, text messaging, blogging,

content sharing, online learning, and much more (Cassidy, Griffin, Manolovitz, Shen, &Turney,
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 7

2011). Students nowadays are also fond of making and watching video blogs which majority of

which are posted in various social media such as Facebook. People in general love to spend most

of their time checking their Facebook updates, and likes, but do they know that there are a lot of

negative effects of using Facebook? Most of the students failed to realize negative impacts of

Facebook on their life. And, the main reason is because they have spending most of their time

using Facebook making it to the point that they are already addicted to it. This is not limited only

to the adults and youths, even children are so much fond in using it and that can lead to several

negative developments. Ideally it is by nature that children would want explore their external

environment through play and interaction yet by observation children indulge themselves in

using gadgets or virtual relationship rather than genuine interactions with the people in their

surroundings. In regards to that, findings presented in Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), reveals

that over-involvement or obsession with social networking by students can have negative

impacts on academic performance.

Furthermore, teachers are noticing that their student’s work is suffering because they

constantly spend time on social networking sites rather than focusing on their homework.

According to BBC News, 58% of teachers said that their children’s spelling is worsening as they

enter the “digital age”. Instead of students concentrating on their homework or studying for a big

test the next day, they are spending hours looking through pictures, answering their page

comments, and chatting with friends on the site’s instant messenger.

Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million active

users on its website every month. By fact, on February 4, 2004, a 19-year-old sophomore

Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the revolutionary site to connect Harvard

University students (Grossman, 2010). But later, this site allows users to build social networks
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 8

with hundreds or even thousands of people around the world of which university students are one

of the primary demographics using Facebook, with features such as photos, wall posts, and status

updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those who want to connect with their friends (Gold,

2011).

Even though Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users, university

students are still its “biggest fans”. Results from a recent paper Ellison et al. (2007) reported that

94% of College students are active Facebook users, spending 60-90 minutes online each day

communicating with their Friends List of 150–200 people. Similarly, Wiley and Sisson (2006; as

cited in Pempek et al, 2009) conducted a large survey on college students from universities in the

developing countries indicated that 91% of students use the Facebook. Ethiopia is also as one of

developing countries intoxicated with around one million users of Facebook in which half of

them have higher education students (Kassashow, 2012)

Though this social network generates billions of dollars for the developer and assists to

contact a relatives detached for long period of time within fraction of seconds, it has impact on

the users in general and on students’ academic performance in particular. So, this research

assesses the impact of Facebook usage on Students’ Academic Performance. The American

Educational Research Association conducted a research and declared at its annual conference in San

Diego California (2009), that social media users study less and generate lower grade (Abaleta et al,

2014).Furthermore, a study conducted by Karpinski and Duberstein (2009), of Ohio Dominican university

on college students who use social network have significantly lower grade point averages (GPAs) than

those who do not. They also mentioned that among various unique distractions of every single generation,

Facebook remains a major distraction of current generation. According to Khan (2009), Facebook users

often time experience poor performance academically.

FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 9

The main purpose of this paper is to trace the relationship of Facebook usage toward

student’s academic performance. The researchers wanted to identify ways of minimizing the bad

impacts of Facebook to students and to show the negative effects of this social networking site

on students’ behavior and performance. This research also focuses on finding ways to

enhance students’ motivation and improve their achievements, in the utilization of social media

specifically Facebook as part of the classroom instructions.

Review of Related Literature

Nelson Mandela once quoted: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to

change the world”. Today’s 21st century learners engage in the use of the latest gadgets that can connect

to any social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Negative and positive use of social media emerge as to

how the learners manage and innovate things with that.

Hew K (2016) in his article emphasizes the behavior and the motivating factors why students

and teacher in the same way use Facebook. The conclusion is somewhat true to some extent stating that

Facebook has of little use in the educational setting rather is has significant role in maintaining constant

communication to students, teachers and majority of the public in general. In addition, Arteaga Sánchez

RCortijoVJaved U (2014) suggests that the factor that affects students in using Facebook is “Social

Influence”. The people that surround the students are salient factors why they use it as well. As a result,

the impact of utilizing Facebook in the classroom setting has little significance than students using it as

a form of communication in order to form social relations. This statement is also supported by Sandra

Okyeadie Mensah and Dr. Ismail Nizam (2016) that the impact of social media to students’ academic life

has gives importance to time appropriateness in which this determines the success and failure of students.

Students who lack time management easily catch negative results. In addition, health addiction is one of

the big problem in which students skip meals that makes them malnourished or ill. Even so, these reasons

have minimal or no significant influence to student’s academic performance.

FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 10

Rithika M. and Sara Selvaraj. (2013) also added that Students spend more time in using social

media which gives them opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates and people. These help

students aim for good education and future career however students mostly rely on its easy accessibility

that ends up reducing focus on learning and retaining information. This social media brings people closer

than before however, students exploit this and use for a better tomorrow. “it should be used to connect,

stay in touch, share views but not waste time on” (Rithika M. and Sara Selvaraj 2013)

Strike the iron when it’s still hot, in other words catch the interest of the students specially that

they are born in the generation Y or what we call technology babies. Can build Interconnectedness and

can access with one another anytime anywhere. Students can understand more if it is through peer to peer

or by group rather than the instructor because they have more or less the same level of mindset and can let

their minds be open to one another without hesitation and won’t be afraid to open up their various ideas.

Social network has a positive impact not only on the how the people is being updated and used to it but

also it improves how the students learns within or outside the classroom setting and instructors learning

techniques and learning styles. Social network is not only a flowery thing in this world because It

promotes the holistic growth and development both in the relationship for the student and the instructors.

In educational factor, social network is not the hindrance in learning because in this; it is boundless,

borderless in the four corners of the classroom. Facebook is now what we called the digital/virtual library

as a classroom of to anyone especially the students. In just one click then enter, everything will be there

that can support and help in anyway Social media nowadays turns to be a necessity and a need of many

individual. There are many factors to consider in using the social media such as the mastery, familiarity,

age and the pace of an individual to cope up by exposing by it.

(Filiz Tiryakioglu 2011)

Ainin, et. Al. (2015) in his research illustrated that there is a positive relationship between

students' Academic Performance and Facebook usage i.e. the higher the usage the better they perceived

they perform. Facebook is used for communication, entertainment and sharing news, pictures and more.
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 11

The students should be aware of protecting their social identity as their Facebook shares are not public.

They must respect privacy as they do not use their friend's Facebook account (Kaya, et. Al. 2016)

Menzies, et. Al. (2017) stated the multiple benefits of Facebook usage for learning and teaching

have been identified such as increased teacher-student and student-student interaction, improved

performance, the convenience of learning and higher engagement. This also highlights the potential

problems and limitations of Facebook usage ranging from educators’ dominance to privacy concerns.

Added by Ellison, et. Al. (2007) stipulated that students use Facebook in initiating and maintaining

friendships and to seek out new information about those in their social circle. Students must be careful

posting on social media that might be harm them in the future. Facebook has been the most researched

platform for teaching and learning. Students should use this tool wisely instead using just for fun or just

wasting scrolling it (Manca, et. Al.2013).

MazmanSUsluel Y (2010) connected this to the model would be beneficial in utilizing them as a

medium in the academe. In this fast paced world where the advent of high-technology is rampantly

used, the educational system should also evolve in adapting to how the 21st century learners learn easily

or so that their learning would be facilitated appropriately. RouisSLimayemMSalehi-Sangari E (2011) in

his paper explains that nowadays it is inevitable to control individuals in using the social media

Facebook in particular.Self-control is a salient factor that can lead students not to be manipulated and

victim by Facebook. Instead, the students are the ones manipulating Facebook and would eventually

control themselves based on their personality traits. By then, student’s self-regulation would benefit

them most especially pertaining to their academic performances since they would have more time to

study rather than indulging so much of their time using Facebook. ManasijevićDŽivkovićDArsić S

(2016) draws the underlying dimensions of Facebook Usage. Commonly majority of the people use

Facebook as a medium of communication. Thus, bridging those people who are miles away that seemed

to be near. In the academe, it is often done by students to create group chats in order for them to be

updated and to ask clarification to their classmates.

FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 12

Social media change the kind of communication and influence the academic life of students. With

the use of technology, the access of information is much easier than the usual way and this improves

different area of skills such as citing critical thinking, collaboration, and knowledge construction. Because

of this, higher institution makes social media a tool to connect teachers, students and higher authorities.

This kind of set up results positively because students’ academic life improved (Raymond Owusu

Boateng & Afua Amankwaa 2016).

Social media (Orachorn Kitchakarn 2016) is a good tool for teachers to facilitate students

learning. Since the millennial today loves facebook then teachers can integrate activities with the use of

that application. Students learn on how to use facebook productively, educationally and most of all,

responsibly. Language is one of the things to be learned by students, with the aid of facebook, students

can learn not just about words, pronunciations, grammar but everything. This can shape students intellect

and facebook as a tool is a good instrument.

The following are the effects of using Facebook to student’s academic performance (Rouis, et.

Al. (2011): promote trust, self-regulations, and performance goal orientations, limits apparent negative

effect on academic performance, better management of social activities and lastly, understand the

consequences of extensive usage of Facebook.

Traditional methods are now slowly fading and are replaced by the technology invented by

human beings. Aside from having an impact on the intrapersonal factor of oneself like acquiring the

different skills and more, it also promotes the interpersonal relationship with others especially within the

community that has a direct influence and interaction. Everything has an advantage and disadvantages

and it’s up to the instructor on how to use it in a productive and engaging way (Tanja E Bosch 2009).

Facebook (Melor Md. Yunus and Hadi Salehi 2012) influence students in terms of writing

because they tend to brainstorm and process information. With the help of Facebook student’s vocabulary

widen and they learn to check the spelling errors. Suddenly, teachers concern more on things that can

distract them such as chatting, playing games or any applications that can make them unfocused on the

important things they have to do. Independent learning of students, though positively gives them power to
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 13

work independently, can actually hinder the social interactions of students. In addition, Aaron M. Fewkes

and Mike McCabe (2012) state that Facebook influence students’ performance at school. It promotes

collaboration, participation, and communication among them. Students benefit these for they now know

how to do extra help with the use of Facebook, homework discussion, self-organization and the use of

Facebook itself. Facebook supports the learning agenda of the students since it improves them

educationally. Students learning enhanced their skills, and cope to the environments trend.

Theoretical Background

This research posits on the different theories or other research study done by theorists
about the impacts of Facebook to the academic performance of students.

Social Influence Theory

Social Influence digs up the change of individual’s attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that

are influenced by others (Kelman, 1958). Different levels of change correspond to differences in

the processes whereby individuals accept the influence. (Kelman, 1958). Social influence hones

the individuals and has an effect in using the social media and influences their attitudes,

behaviors and beliefs. The social identity and group norm have significant effects on user

participation (Zhou, 2011). Collaboration and communication affects the growth and popularity

of social networks as the years goes by (Cheung, et,al 2011) . Individuals throughout the world

are connected and networked together to share, create, associate and provide knowledge and

wisdom (Cheung, et,al 2011). Social media platforms provide users to interact and to enjoy

multimedia experience such as to make a profile, chatting or sending personal message to other

profiles and linking each other via friend request. The social media platforms especially
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 14

Facebook are so famous, it markets the millennials of today, and it gives and access information,

an outlet (Moreno, 2014)

Social Network Theory

Social network theory cites the role of social relationships or interaction in transmitting

information conveys personal or media influence and enabling attitudinal or behavioral change

(Liu, et al. 2017). It has been used to define the association, communication, the type and

characteristics of the relationship that exists between individuals and groups (Williams and

Durrance, 2008) The use of social media changed people on how they interact and communicate

with each other (Ayankoya, 2014). Social media allow for individuals, groups or organizations to

build their social network or friends and followers (Ayankoya, 2014). Social media platforms

like Facebook have appeared as a relevant channel for spreading of information. Some studies

indicate that Facebook members use the site not only for socializing but as source of information

on politics or public affairs (Glynn, et.al 2012).

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The research is utilizing qualitative method technique more specifically data mining.

Data mining is the practice of examining large databases in order to generate new information,

about extrapolating patterns and new knowledge from the data you’ve already collected. Data

collected is based on the finding of different research mention above.

Data Gathering

The researchers utilized the data mainly from internet sources and studies related to the

research study. Data were collected, scrutinized and analyzed in support of the particular study.

Data gathered were basis of the discussion and interpretation in relation to the specific method

used.

Discussion

The use of social media among students has reached high levels and has affected their

study time, poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as well as

diverting their attention from their studies (Ndaku, 2013). Students spend much of their study

time on social networks than in their academic undertakings and it has affected their Grade Point
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 21

Average (GPA). Socializing in the internet has become an increasingly important part of young

adult life (Gemmill and Peterson, 2006).

Relative to the general population, adolescents and young adults are the heaviest

computer and Internet users, primarily using it for completing school assignments, email and or

instant messaging and playing computer games; (DeBell and Chopsman, 2016). Social

networking sites (hereafter SNS) are the latest online communication tool that allow users to

create a public or private profile to interact with people in their networks (Boyd and Ellison,

2008).

Students today use technology through innovative ways due to which they are referred to

as millennial and have changed the way they think. Social media platforms especially Facebook

play a big role on students’ academic performance. In terms of academic, Facebook influence

students’ performance at school. Students able to share, collaborate, participate and communicate

in active means of activity especially if they have projects or assignments. However, poor

grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as well as diverting their

attention from their studies- are some of the common effects of excessive use of social media to

students. They tend to spend much of their study time on social networks than in their academic

undertakings that greatly affect their academic performance. Students merely use Facebook for

socializing activities rather than academic purpose.

In the other hand, usage of Facebook gives opportunities for connecting with friends,

classmates and people. It helps students aim for good education and future career, it brings

people closer than before however, students exploit this and use for a better tomorrow.

Conclusion
FACEBOOK USAGE IN STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 22

It is concluded that social media platforms have a significant impact on students’

academic performance. It may damage the future of the students due to inappropriate use of

technology; like, they may have poor grammar construction, wrong grammar and more.

Moreover, in instance imagining one student spent over six hours checking social media site and

responded while completing their homework; more likely increase distraction of the students

which can be harmful to their academic performance.

Social media is attractive; it not only provides students update of events but also provides

luxury of happiness. To some degree, it absolutely has a significant effect to the lives of students

including the grades.

This research has revealed that students were likely to be affected by social media,

especially Facebook. It is indicated that most students would prefer to use social media and

spend many hours checking social media sites. Therefore, educators and parents need to be

concerned and try to find better ways and means to solve these problems. As well as, students

should balance the relationship or their time between social media and academic study.
