DISTRICT MEMORANDUM

1. As one of the major outputs of learners in English during the first semester of school year 2019-
2020 and to showcase the ability of learners in the application of their learning in the different
macro-skill, this Office, will conduct the 2019 DISTRICT ENGLISH EXTRAVAGANZA AND
READ-A-THON on January 31,2020 at Darimbang Elementary School, Darimbang, Tagoloan,
Lanao del Norte.
2. The event shall include the following contests with the mechanics found in the attachment.
3. Participants to this activity are the selected pupil of the different contests in every school, School
Principals, English Teachers.
4. Enclosed is the list of facilitators and judges, contest pieces and contest guidelines. Facilitators
are requested to prepare the registration forms, attendance sheets, score sheets, and other contest
materials.
5. The host school is requested to prepare the opening program, contest rooms, sound system and
other necessities.

CONTEST GUIDELINES
1. Only one (1) contestant who is a grade 1 learner certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. Contestants shall wear their school uniform.
3. Each contestant shall deliver the poem provided by the Division Office.
4. Top three (3) will be declared winners with gold, silver and bronze medals and certificate of
recognition for all the winners.
5. Criteria:
Delivery - 30 points
(mastery piece, pronunciation, intonation, expression and interpretation)
Voice Projection -10 points
Platform Behavior -10 points
Total - 50 points
6. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.
1. Only one (1) contestant who is a grade 2 learner certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. Contestants shall wear their school uniform.
3. All contestants shall be placed in the holding room together with their coach. A teacher shall
read a story in front of all contestants.
4. The coaches and contestants will have a one-hour preparation.
5. No parent is allowed inside the holding area.
6. The contestant is given 5-7 minutes to retell the story inside the contest room.
Presentation of pictures is not allowed.
7. Points will be given based on the following criteria:
Accuracy -15 points
Vocal variety -15 points
On-stage performance - 15 points
(eye contact, facial expression, emotional expression)
English Proficiency -5 points
Total - 50 points
8. Top three (3) will be declared winners with gold, silver and bronze medals and certificate of
recognition for all the winners.

school.
2. Contestants shall wear their school uniform.
3. All contestants shall be placed in one room as holding area to read the Big Book by themselves
for one (1) hour. The big book to be read will be provided by the management.
4. No coach or parent is allowed inside the holding area.
5. The contestant is given 5-7 minutes to tell the story using the Big Book provided.
Presentation of pictures is not allowed.
7. Points will be given based on the following criteria:
Voice projection -15 points
Vocal variety -15 points

Spelling (Grade 4)
1. Only one (1) contestant who is a grade 4 learner certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. All contestants are required to wear their school uniform with ID.
3. All coaches and contestants must be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the
contest for the briefing/reminders from the committee.
4. Contestants shall bring tag board (4x12”), board eraser, and white chalk for the contest.
5. The contest shall be facilitated by a committee composed of the following:
a. Arbiter b. Bee Master c. Time Keeper d. Checkers d. Tabulator
7. The American Heritage Dictionary shall be used as the official reference.
8. Top three (3) will be declared winners with gold, silver and bronze medals and certificate of
recognition for all the winners.
9. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.
MECHANICS
1. The contest is done in 3 rounds: easy, average, and difficult. There shall be ten (10) words for
every round.
2. The Bee Master will give the correct pronunciation of the word, including its part of speech and
definition. It shall be used in the sentence. The word is read twice.
3. Time allotment and points:
a. Easy Round -5 seconds/word -1point/word
b. Average Round -7 seconds/word -2points/word
c. Difficult Round -10 seconds/word -3points/word
4. The contest shall follow the elimination system. Contestants who do not get half of the total
points in the Easy Round shall not proceed to the Average Round.
5. Protest may be filed by anyone (the speller, parent, teacher, etc.) wishing to reinstate a speller
into the contest but will not be heard from any individual seeking to dislodge another speller from
the competition. Protests should always be verbally made to a designated person upon
completion of a round.
6. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.
7. The most important rule of all. Please have fun, relax, whether you are a participant or a
spectator.
1. Only one (1) contestant who is a grade 5 learner certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. All contestants shall be placed in a testing room along with the facilitators who will run the
contest. No coaches, chaperons and parents are allowed inside the contest area.
3. The contest will run for one (1) hour.
4. Top three (3) will be declared winners with gold, silver and bronze medals and certificate of
recognition for all the winners.
5. The decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.
1. Only one (1) contestant who is a grade 6 learner certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. All coaches and contestants must be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the
contest for the briefing/reminders from the committee.
3. Contestants shall be placed in one (1) holding area to receive the piece to talk abput, 30 minute
before going up on stage for the contest.
4. Topics range from current issues and general information.
5. The contestant shall deliver the talk on a specific topic in 3-5 minutes.
7. Points will be given based on the following criteria:
Content -20 points
English Proficiency -20 points
Platform Behavior -10 points
Total - 50 points

1. Only one (1) group composed of Grade 8 learners certified by the coach shall represent the
school.
2. The group shall be composed of a maximum 10 members.
3. The piece shall be prepared by the management.
4. Presentation shall not be more than7 minutes including entrance and exit.
5. Time keeper is assigned to flash the following colors:
Yellow - 10 seconds entrance after the exit of the preceding group
Green - 3-5 minutes delivery
Yellow - remaining 1 minute
Red - end of the talk
6. No props allowed.
7. Points will be given based on the following criteria:
Delivery -40 points
(mastery of piece, pronunciation, intonation, expression and interpretation)
Stress and Rhythm -40 points
Creativity -10 points
