SURAJ KUND MELA

Suraj kund mela is celebrated at Surajkund, District Faridabad


from 1st Feb to 17th February. There main attractions include
rich showcase of regional and international crafts and
traditions. A splash of colours, rhythm of drum beats and joy
de-vivre merge at Surajkund in Faridabad, Haryana during the
first fortnight of each February. The curtains go up on the
acclaimed annual Surajkund International Crafts Mela from 2nd
February onwards, a celebration of Indian folk traditions and
cultural heritage.
Occupying a place of pride on the international tourist
calendar, more than a million visitors throng the Mela during
the fortnight including thousands of foreign tourists. The
Surajkund Mela is unique as it showcases the richness and
diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms and cultural fabric of
India, & is the largest crafts fair in the world.
The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority &
Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of
Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs. For the
33rd Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2019, the state
of Maharashtra has been chosen to be the Theme State. At
least 20 countries & all the states of India will be participating
in the Mela. In 2013, the fair was upgraded to an International
Level and was rechristened as ‘28th Surajkund International
Crafts Mela’. In 2014, over 15 countries from European &
African continents participated in the Mela including SAARC
nations. In the upcoming Surajkund International Crafts Mela,
over 20 countries are expected to participate.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 To organise, manage and run the Surajkund International


Craft Mela at Surajkund Faridabad with a view to promote
handicrafts, handlooms with the aid of craftsmen invited
from all over the country.
 To identify languishing and lesser known crafts and to
introduce them to patrons.
 To display crafts and loom techniques by organising
demonstration sections in the Mela grounds.
 To undertake the promotion of export of handlooms and
handicrafts.
 To set up an environment in which rural crafts traditions
could be displayed and to project the traditional rural
ambience of a typical village near Delhi for travellers who
may not have the time or means to visit an Indian village.

A. CONCEPTUALIZATION: The Mela was conceived

indigenous technology, but were suffering due to the
cheaper machine-made imitations. This is an earnest
effort by Surajkund Mela Authority & Haryana Tourism to
provide a platform for craftspersons and wavers to directly
market their wares by eliminating the middlemen.

D. CUSTOMIZATION: The Mela was conceived primarily to
promote the pool of skilled artisans, who used indigenous

craftspersons and wavers to directly market their wares by
eliminating the middlemen.
To preserve the languishing arts & crafts of India, Surajkund
Crafts Mela was hosted for the first time in 1987. The Mela
ground is spread over 40 acres and houses about 1010 work
huts that host craftspersons and weavers.
Surajkund International Crafts Mela offers its visitors a lifetime
experience as it unfolds a wonderful range of textiles,
paintings, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta,
stonework, lac querware, cane and grass products.
D.CARRY OUT-
 To enliven the visitors' mood, national and international
cultural artistes present day long cultural performances at
the open air 'Chaupal' within the Mela ground.
 Watch renowned singers, musicians and poets perform
daily at Chaupal from 6.00 pm onwards during the Mela
fortnight.
 A number of competitions for school and college students
to be held during the Mela.
 A separate section is earmarked for amusement and
adventure activities ensuring that the Mela offers
entertainment for all age groups.

 Mela Timings 10:30 AM-8.30 PM.
 To enrich the dining experience of the common man, a VIP
enclosure is created where visitors can dine after making a
payment.
 Food kiosks and permanent food vending points selling
packed and ready-to-eat items have been set up in an
artistic manner. The Food Court 'Haveli' in the Mela
premises dons a new look.
 A special ambience is created in the Mela area. It is
divided into six zones . The profusion of elements from
Nature, life and music will accentuate the Mela
surrounding.
 The security arrangements had been beefed up with CCTV
Cameras installed in the Mela ground along with the Night
Vision Cameras. A large number of security personnel
were deployed within the Mela premises to prevent the
occurrence of any untoward incident or mishap.
 The parking area for vehicles had been increased and
separate entry and exits had been provided so as to
ensure smooth and unhindered flow of traffic.
 Golf Cart and a Battery Operated Rickshaw were available
on request, for facilitating the movement of senior citizens
and differently-abled persons. Special plan had been made
for the smooth movements of the pedestrians and walk-
friendly ramps had been created instead of stairs in the
Mela ground.
 Environment friendly e-toilets had also been set up within
the Mela premises, in addition to the traditional toilets.
 A complete ban on the plastic/polythene bags within the
Mela premises.
 Souvenirs such as Mugs, neckties,key rings Umbrellas,
fridge magnets, coasters & decorative plates will be
available for sale on affordable prizes.
 Awards namely Kala Mani, Kala Nidhi and Kala Shri were
given away to the outstanding craftspersons.

The acclaimed Surajkund International Crafts Mela-2016 is round the corner,


starting from February 1-15 at Surajkund, Faridabad. The Mela is known for
showcasing exquisite handlooms, handicrafts and diverse folk arts of the
country.

For the convenience of visitors, the online ticketing facility has already started,
so people can simply book their tickets much in advance sitting at home at
www.haryanatourism.gov.in. Also this year, more access points for buying the
Mela entry tickets have been introduced.
Keeping pace with Digital India initiative, the Mela entry tickets are also
available through five online ticketing portals namely bookmyshow,
buzzintown, eventshigh, townscript  and explara. The payment of Mela entry
tickets can be done through payment gateway of HDFC and Axis Banks.

Dr Sumita Misra, Principal Secretary, Tourism, Government of Haryana and


Vice-Chairperson, Surajkund Mela Authority informed that under a tie-up with
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Mela entry tickets that will be on sale at selected
30 Delhi metro stations  on strategic locations such as major stations, terminal
stations and interchange stations.

The entry tickets for the Mela will be available at Delhi metro stations namely
Dilshad Garden, Inderlok, Rithala, Samaypur Badli, Jahangir Puri, GTB Nagar,
Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Saket, Sikanderpur, HUDA
City Centre, Noida City Centre, Botanical Garden, Karol Bagh, Kirti Nagar,
Uttam Nagar East, Dwarka Sector 21, Vaishali, Laxmi Nagar, Mundka, ITO,
Mandi House-6, Lajpat Nagar, Govindpuri, Sarita Vihar, Tughlakabad,
Badarpur, Neelam Chowk Ajronda and Escorts Mujesar.

PRESS INVITE
The Haryana government is looking for corporate and banks
sponsorship for its yearly crafts fair at Surajkund in Faridabad.

The Haryana Tourism Corporation, which organises the crafts


fair in collaboration with the Union Government, today invited
expression of interest from sponsors for the 22nd Surajkund
Crafts mela to be held from February 1-15, 2008.

The sponsors among other things would be allowed to display


their products and mobile vehicles at the 15 day fair, which is
visited by about five lakh people every year.

The Haryana Tourism Corporation would accept bids by January


10, 2008.

The Corporation as part of the revenue raising exercise would


also sell rights to sponsors to display their logos and symbols
on the entry tickets, publicity stickers, calendar for programme
and hoardings to be set up in Delhi and Faridabad.
The Corporation is also seeking sponsors for cultural
programmes which are organised at Natyashala, an open air
theatre at the fair ground.
