Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sequences, polynomials and
polynomial equations.
Performance Standard:
The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving sequences, polynomials
and polynomial equations in different disciplines through appropriate and accurate
representations.
Learning Competency:
The learner determines arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
Learning Competency Code: M10AL-Ib-c-1
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
A. define arithmetic sequence by obtaining the common difference;
B. apply the formula of the arithmetic sequence in finding the nth terms; and
C. appreciate the importance of the formula of an arithmetic sequence.

The teacher discuss the definition of the arithmetic sequence then illustrate
an example of a sequence in which there is a common difference to define further
the definition of the sequence.
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained
by adding a constant called the common difference. Common Difference is the difference
between any two consecutive terms.
45 – 35 = 10 7–5=2
35 – 25 = 10 5–3=2
25 – 15 = 10 3–1=2
Common Difference is 10 Common Difference is 2
3. Activity
The teacher calls students randomly to identify if the following is an
example of arithmetic sequence.
1. 3, 7, 11, 15, 19
2. 4, 16, 64, 256
3. 1, 0, 1, 2, 3
4. 48, 24, 12, 6, 3, ...
5. 9.5, 7.5, 5.5, 3.5, ...
Answer:
1. Arithmetic Sequence
2. Not
3. Arithmetic Sequence
4. Not
5. Arithmetic Sequence
where:
an = nth term
a1 = first term
n = number of term from a1 to an
d = common difference
Example 1:
Find the 14th terms of the sequence 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .
Example 3:
Find the 42nd term of the sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, …
