The very English custom of taking afternoon tea is thought to have found its roots
in the 19th century by Lady Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Lunch in those
days were rather early and dinner was not served until late in the evening.
Every afternoon, the Duchess found that she was slightly famished and started
asking to enjoy a pot of tea with some light refreshments.
She began inviting her friends to join her and very soon, having the tea in the
middle of the afternoon became a fashionable thing to do.
