    SEMI- DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATH IV

    Dante, Aimee, D.

    I. Objectives

    At the end of the lesson the pupils should be able to;

    A. Identify what is series of operations (MDAS).

    B. Solve problem involving series of operations (MDAS).

    C. Appreciate that MDAS rule is important in our daily lives especially in computing
    math problem.

    II. Subject Matter

    A. Topic: Performing a Series of Operations (MDAS)

    B. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Material 4 pp. 82-84

    C. Materials: illustrations materials, charts, pentel pen, etc.

    III. Procedures

    A. ACTIVITY

    Motivation: (Who am I?)

    Fill the correct answer before the number.

    1. I take one number and add it together a number of times. Sometimes I also called
    “times”. Who am I?

    2. I splitting into equal parts or groups. Who am I?

    3. I am combining two or more numbers. Who am I?

    4. I take away from a group or a numbers of things and the number of things of the
    group become less. Who am I?

    B. ANALYSIS

    20 – 3 + 5 = N 8 + 14 ÷ 7 × 3 – 5 = N

    2 × 30 ÷ 5 = N 8 × 2 + 3 – 10 ÷ 5 + 6 – 3 × 4 = N

    Do you know what a series of operations is? (Present the topic/title)
    How many operations are there in each problem?

    C. ABSTRACTION

    Explain how to solve the problem using a rule to arrive at the correct answer, that the
    MDAS rule must be followed.
    A series of operation (MDAS) stands for the 4 basic operations.-Multiplications, Division,
    Addition, and Subtraction. To solve the problems use a rule to arrive at the correct
    answer. The MDAS rule must be followed strictly to get the correct answer. The rule say
    that (present the rule): Multiply or Divide first in order as they come left to right, then,
    add or subtract in the order as they come from left to right.

    Examples:

    2+3×4=N

    1.) 2+3×4

    2 + 12 Thus, 2 + 3 × 4 = 14

    But, what if we just have a problem with M and D?

    Just work from left to right.

    15 ÷ 3 × 10 ÷ 2 = N

    2.) 15 ÷ 3 × 10 ÷ 2

    5× 10 ÷ 2

    50 ÷2

    It’s the same problem with Addition and Subtraction. Just work from left to right.

    20 – 3 + 5 = N

    3.) 20 – 3 + 5

    Now, let’s mix it up! Here’s one with Addition, Division, Multiplication and Subtraction.

    8 + 14 ÷ 7 × 3 – 5 = N

    Remember... MDAS

    ×÷ before + -

    If you have both × and ÷, go left to right.

    If you have both + and - , go left to right

    So, Hit this section first and go left to right

    Now, just go left to right

    8 + 14 ÷ 7 × 3 – 5

    8+ 2 ×3–5

    8+ 6 –5

    14 –5

    GENERALIZATION:
    Remember class! Do (MDAS) Multiplication or Division before you do Addition or
    Subtraction.

    D. APPLICATION

    Divide the class into 4 groups.

    Distribute the worksheet. Have each group do activity 1 to 4.


    G1: Give the meaning of MDAS.

    G2: Give or show your solutions of the expressions on the series of operations.

    76 – 8 × 9 = N

    G3: Fill in the blank with the number to arrive at the correct answer.

    G4: Use the digits 3, 7, and 6 once to make the statement true.

    Closure: Ok class, we know that MDAS helps us a lot to get answers to every question
    on how to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

    IV. EVALUATION

    Direction: Copy and Solve the following. Show your solutions in your paper and encircle
    the final answer.

    1. 7×8+130 = n

    2. 15÷3×20 = n

    3. 3+83-73 = n

    4. 12×3+18÷6×7 = n

    V. ASSIGNMENT

    Solve the following problems on your notebook.

    1. The sum of four numbers is 24. When another numbers is added, their average
    becomes 7. Find the number.
