ABSTRACT
Focused group discussion was the factors that affect the decision of
Grade 12 students may vary in different means. The researchers chose 5
respondents from the Grade 12 ABM selected students of Jose Rizal
University.
The said study started in July and ended October of the current year.
Finding shows that even if students are given two more years in high school
4
and guided in their career paths, there are still students who are undecided
with their course to take in college. This research paper focuses on factors
that affect the decisions of Grade 12 ABM Jose Rizal University students and
make them an undecided in what would they taking courses in college.
Undecided students may experience a lot of struggles as they go through
their college life.
Introduction
The factors that affect the decision of Grade 12 Students may vary in
different means. It may be from their family or the student’s passion. Another
thing that plays a big effect in a student’s decision of what field to study is
the people around him. Choosing their course may well turn out to be the
biggest decision of their life, which is why everything associated with it
should be given serious and long time and consideration. A lot of students go
through college without knowing what career path they want (Milinkovic, I.,et
al., 2017). Before students can pick a career path, they need to experience
5
what that career is like and what it involves (Ayela-Uwangue, A., & Lande, M.,
n.d.).
Research Problem
The following researchers sought to find answers with the following question:
1) What are the struggles of Grade 12 ABM students who are still
undecided with their course in college?
Research Objectives
1) To determine what are the factors of the students that affect their
decision in choosing their course in college.
2) To determine Grade 12 ABM students’ perceptions on what are their
decisions in choosing their course in college.
3) To know the struggles of undecided Grade 12 ABM students in
choosing their course in college

the role models of guiding their career path. Many students are undecided
because someone or something had influenced them into something that
they aren’t sure of so they end up being undecided of the course that they
will take in college there are also people whom they follow even though it is
not necessary for them to follow but they are forced to. But some of these
people may also be the answer/key for them to know what they really want
course should they take in college.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
9
The researchers decided to use qualitative research for seeking the
answers to the research problems. The researchers use qualitative research
to analyze the data gathered in order to know the struggles of ABM, Grade 12
students in choosing the strand they are going to take up in college.
Qualitative Research is a kind of exploratory research that explains and
elaborate concrete opinions, reasons, and thoughts. It bestow more
information in specific topic and situations. The Research design that the
researchers use is phenomenology since the study focus not just in individual
but in a group of people having struggles in choosing college courses. This is
the more applicable way in knowing how the Grade 12 students from JRU
coping up with being undecided to the course they will take soon in college.
Data Collection Method In the data collection method to get and provide
accurate information, the researchers used an interview method for collecting
the data. The researchers main purpose is to interview the selected
participants who are still undecided on what course they will take in college
and to know the main reason why they are still undecided. By interviewing
the participants, the participants will state their opinions, experiences and
reason in the related topic. The researchers decided to do an interview
method, so that the participants will not be able to give a false information
such as name, gender or age unlike the other data collection such as
questionnaires and also they can give a complete description for their
responses.
10
share this discomfort, and if an interviewer expresses anger, he or she is in
danger of passing it on to the participant. So, researchers should try to
remain calm, polite, and interested at all times.
Instrumentation
Ten relevant questions and some profile information of the
interviewees were conducted by the researchers to gather more data and
information regarding on the topic given. Non-directive and Unstructured
interview will be the method which researchers will use in getting information
needed to answer the research.
11
All of the interviewees said that they still need to put effort in class
because they need that so they will be able to go to college. They want to
develop skills so they may be able to identify what course they want to take.
Basis to know what course to take in college
Most of the interviewees said that their basis was their skills because
they want to take the course that they are compatible and comfortable
because they want to hone their skills so if they can already decide on what
course to take, they may have a little background on it. One of the
interviewee said that her she wants a course related do business and
management because she already has a little background due to taking ABM
strand in senior high school. Undecided students should already know what
basis should they follow to know what course to take in college so they won’t
struggle in the near future.
Difficulties experienced/experiencing in ABM strand
Most of the interviewees said that they struggle in balancing the
totals, amounts. One of the interviewees said that she struggles because she
doesn’t know whether she will continue to pursue the strand until in college.
All of the interviewees obviously experiencing difficulties because they don’t
know what path to take yet. They need to be patient and understandable
regarding their current situations
How they deal with the struggles their experiencing
All of the interviewees have the same strategy in dealing the
struggles they are experiencing. They said that they deal with their struggles
by pushing their selves to the limit and strive harder for their families. One
student said that she always gets advice from her family and friends because
she believes that her parents knows her best.
What course does their parents want them to take?
Most of the interviewees claimed that their parents want them to
take whatever they want to take because their parents let them decide for
themselves so that they won’t be pushed in something they don’t want to do.
Some interviewees claimed that their parents want them to take a specific
course because their parents wants them to have the same work as them
(interviewees’ parents)
12
Advantages in the chosen strand in making decision on what course
to take in college
All of the interviewees said that the advantages in their chosen
strand was gaining knowledge and improving their skills that they may use
for the near future.
If they were given a chance to change strand what would it be?
Most of the interviewee said that if they would be given a chance to
change strand it would be STEM because they want to be an engineer. Some
students want to go to HUMMSS because they wanted to be in the field of
law.
How being undecided will help you in grabbing a lot of opportunity
and upcoming college and future job.
According to some of the interviewees being undecided helps them
in grabbing opportunities in college and future job because they will
experience a lot of things and it helps them to discover their weaknesses and
strengths.
Things considered in choosing ABM
According to some of the interviewees the thing that they consider
in choosing ABM was their prior knowledge because of having background in
accountancy during their junior high school and it helps them to cope their
lessons easily. One of the interviewees said her friends influenced them to go
in ABM.
Does their parents support their strand?
Most of the interviewees said that their parent supports their strand
but some of the interviewees said that their parents doesn’t want them in
ABM because they wanted them to be in STEM because their parents believe
that they can have more opportunities in that strand.
13
According to the interviewees, they still don’t recognize their full
potential so they just want to improve their skills and gaining more
knowledge by choosing ABM strand.
Conclusions
The results of this study generally supports the findings. All through
the examination, researchers discovered that the variables that influence the
choice of grade 12 ABM students it might be from their family or the
student’s passion. Another thing that plays a major impact in a student’s
choice of what field to take in. Picking their courses may well end up being
greatest choice of their life, which is why everything associated with it should
be given serious and long time and consideration. A lot of students go
through college without knowing what profession they need. Overall,
undecided students have their own struggle experiencing but most of them
didn’t recognize their full potential or skills so they didn’t know what to
pursue in college.
Recommendations
After finding out the struggles of Grade 12 Abm undecided students in
choosing their college courses, the researchers would like to recommend to
have a basis on choosing their career path. The researcher also recommend
to know their courses already before they graduate senior high school to
avoid wasting money on shifting courses on college. Since the researchers
conducted a qualitative study about the struggles of grade 12 Abm students
in choosing their college courses, the researchers would like also to
recommend the future the researchers to conduct a study about struggles
also of grade 12 students and we suggest to a group of different strands from
Academic track STEM and HUMMS. The future researcher should conduct a
survey about the struggles they are experiencing. In addition, the researcher
lastly recommend to use another type of study which is quantitative study.
