A. BOOK REVIEW
This book shows us the aim of the study about translation which covers the theory and
practice of translation in general and particular aspects. The theory and practice is intended to
give an easy way to studying translation and start with translating literary text from the
source language to the target language. It can be English-Indonesian or Indonesian-English.
This book is expected to help the reader’s problem about translating text. And don’t be doubt
about the theory and practice procedure, because this study of translation has been arranged
well.
This first chapter reports some points which are the meaning of translation, type of
translation, the meaning of translator, meaning and style and translation, linguistic and
cultural translation, and system for translation. In the very beginning of the chapter, this book
states some meaning of translation according to Catford and Halliday. Robert Lado also
divides translation into two types which are written translation and live translation. In written
translation, according to Lado, has two types these are factual translation and literary
translation. And about the live translation, it can be called as interpretation/interpreting.
Interpretation is a oral and immediate translation spoken by an interpreter. This interpretation
also has two parts, those are continuous interpretation and consecutive interpretation.
The next point in this chapter is the meaning of translator. Translator is the producer of
translation, can be describe as someone who load and change the source language into the
target language with a good understanding materials and culture with two languages.
This book also state the meaning of literary translation. What it is? Literary translation is one
of the two types of translation that stated above and contains literary materials such as novels,
dramas, poems, short-stories, and operas.
Then the next point is meaning and style in translation. This book stated that meaning is a
primary priority in translation. It have to the same meaning as the original. So it can be
concluded that meaning is the most important part in translation. So otherwise with the style,
this book said that style is secondary part but nevertheless important too. This part is related
with personality and creativity a translator so it is talked about how creative and interesting
translation text.
Linguistic translation based on this book is only information which is linguistically implicit
in the original is made explicit. And cultural translation is the message is changed and
adjusted with the culture of target language.
And the last point on this chapter is the system of translation, those are direct system and
roundabout route system. Direct system is system of translation that only translating strictly
word to word. Different with roundabout route system is system of translation that through
the transfer and restructuring word to make it more acceptable.
In this chapter, readers are served with a methods that written step by step in order number so
it can make the readers easier to understand and practicing. Those some steps are reading
accurately the whole text, looking the text section by section, translating them section by
section, rereading and correcting the result, and the last is recorrecting and rewriting the
whole result as a complete text.
This chapter only consist of a resume from the first chapter until the last chapter with an
easier text to read.
I think that this book is very good because it use the easy word to understand and it serves
some example tables that can be a references how to translating text well. Overall this book
so helpful to be a guide for a translator.
