It was the last game of the season and we made it to the championship game. It
was my senior year in high school and if we won it would be our third state
championship in a row. Before the game I wasn’t nervous at all. My team was focused,
and everyone had a great attitude. Our team was the Wildcats and we were versing the
Bulldogs which was our rival school. As we were standing at half court waiting for the
tip-off, I definitely began to feel a little bit of nerves, but I knew I had worked so hard for
this game and was ready. I felt even more nervous when I looked in the crowd and
realized that my favorite player LeBron James was in the stands watching my game. As
soon as I looked back, they tipped the ball off and the game had started. Each quarter
was 8 minutes and after five minutes of playing we were down by eight points, so my
coach called a timeout. When we got to the bench our coach told us to keep our heads
up and continue our game plan. When we got back on the floor, they passed me the ball
and I made a layup. At the end of the quarter the score was 16 to 16 and we had come
back and gotten into a rhythm. Our bench’s uplifting disposition encouraged us to keep
fighting and come back. At the beginning of the second quarter my coach
recommended for me to shoot the ball more, so I complied. I began to make a lot of
shots and started to have a smug attitude which I could tell was irritating the other team.
At the end of the second quarter the score was 30 to 19 and we were winning. While we
walked through the entrance of our locker room for halftime the team was excited and
had a good feeling that we had the game in our hands. During the first play of the third
quarter we were on a fastbreak and I passed the ball to my best friend Tasha. She
made the layup, but she landed wrong on her leg. At that moment I didn’t recognize it
but after looking at her leg I realized it was broken. As it happened the crowd went silent
and the trainers went out to assist her. Tasha was such a tremendous player and was
such a vital part to our team. She was a senior and my best friend, so it hurt me so
much to watch her leave the court on a stretcher. After about ten minutes the game
finally resumed, and the Bulldogs began to come back. At the end of the third quarter
the score was 43 to 41 Bulldogs. Our team hadn’t gotten over losing Tasha. When we
got to the bench our coach said we had a decision to make either lose this game
because we can’t get over what happened to Tasha or win this game for Tasha and
make her proud. As the fourth quarter began, we decided as a team that we were going
to win this game for Tasha. 7 minutes went by and the score was 55 to 54 Bulldogs. It
was our ball and there was 1 second left, so our coach called a timeout. The plan was
for me to come off a screen from Kelly and get the ball and shoot. When we got back on
the court the play succeeded and when I went up for the jump shot, I got fouled with 0.1
seconds left in the game. While I was at the free throw line, I could feel the immense
pressure. I had to make both shots to win the game and if I didn’t, we would have to go
to overtime or possibly lose the game if I missed both. I took a deep breath, bent my
knees, and shot the ball. I made the first shot and it was all net. The second shot was
even scarier and more nerve-racking because I knew this shot could determine how the
game ended. I took another deep breath and let the ball fly. The ball spun around the
rim and went in! Our bench tried to stifle their excitement, but they couldn’t. The crowd
went wild and I had a huge smile on my face because I knew we were going to win the
game. There was only 0.1 seconds left which wasn’t enough time for the Bulldogs to get
a shot up. When the Bulldogs inbounded the ball and the clock hit zero our bench
rushed the floor and hugged me so hard that I tumbled to the ground. It was the best
feeling in the whole world knowing we just won our third straight state championship
and knowing I was the one to hit the game winning free throws. The trophy ceremony
was amazing, but it was finally time to go and enjoy my win with my family. That day
was the best and most nerve-racking day of my life, but I would never change it for the
world.
