CLASS VI FUN WITH MAGNETS SUB: SCIENCE

II Short Answer Questions

Q1.What are magnetic poles?

A. The regions of a magnet where its magnetic power is the strongest are called as

magnetic poles.

Q2.What would happen to the poles if a magnet is broken into four pieces?

A. If a magnet is broken into four pieces, each piece will have its own north pole
and south pole as magnetic poles always occur in pairs.

Q3. Draw a diagram to show attraction and repulsion of magnetic poles.

A. Page 152 – Fig 12.5

Like poles repels and unlike poles attract.

Q4.What are keepers? Draw a diagram of keepers for the bar magnet and horseshoe
magnet.

A. Keepers are pieces of iron that are placed across the poles of a magnet to help
preserve its magnetism. A horse shoe needs only one keeper and bar magnets are
stored in pairs with two keepers.

Diagram: Page 156 – Fig 12.10

Q5. In what ways can a magnet be demagnetized?

A. Magnets can be demagnetized if they are not used and stored with care. They
can be demagnetized by hammering, heating or by improper storage they might
become weak.

II Long Answer Questions

Q1.How will you distinguish between two identical bars, one of which is a steel bar and
the other is a magnet?

A. To distinguish between two identical bars, all we need is a magnet. A magnet

will attract both ends of the given iron bar, whereas it will show attraction as
well as repulsion for the given magnet bar. So, we are using the property of
repulsion to identify which one of the given bars is a magnet. Therefore,
repulsion is the surest test of magnetism.

Q2. State some properties of magnets.

A2. Properties of a magnet are:

1. Directive property – A freely suspended bar magnet always comes to rest in

N - S direction.
2. Poles of a magnet cannot be isolated and exist in pairs.
3. Like poles repel and unlike poles attract each other.

Q3. Explain methods of magnetization.

A: Magnets can be prepared by 1) stroking 2) by passing electricity through a magnetic

substance.

1) Stroking - A needle should be placed on a table. A bar magnet should be held

over one end of the needle and rubbed to the entire length of the needle. The
magnet should be lifted to first end of the needle and repeated for about 30-40
times .This method is called stroking.
2) Magnets can also be made by passing electricity through a magnetic substance.
Such magnets are called electromagnets. These temporary magnets are created
by wrapping a coil of wire around a soft iron core or nail. When electric current
flows through wire, a magnetic field is created around the wire and the
substance acts as a magnet.

Q4. How will you magnetize an iron nail with the help of a bar magnet?

A: A needle should be placed on a table. A bar magnet should be held over one end of
the needle and rubbed to the entire length of the needle. The magnet should be lifted to
the first end of the needle and repeated for about 30-40 times .This method is called
stroking.

Q5. Explain the magnetism of the Earth. What are Electromagnets? Give their uses.

A: Earth behaves as a huge bar magnet.

The south pole of this huge magnet lies close to the Earth’s geographic North pole and
the North pole of this magnet lies close to the Earth's geographic south pole.
The magnetic south pole of the earth is situated near the geographical north pole and
the magnetic north pole of the Earth near the geographical south pole. So, When a bar
magnet is freely suspended, its north pole is attracted to the magnetic south pole of the
earth and south pole of bar magnet is attracted to magnetic north pole of the earth .The
Earth's magnetism is caused due to movement of hot liquid present deep inside the
Earth.

Q6. What are Electromagnets? Give their uses.

A: Electromagnets are magnetic substances that behave as a magnet due to the influence
of magnetism. They are temporary magnets.

*Uses of Magnets - Magnets are used in cranes to separate and lift iron and steel objects
from scrap heaps.

*They are used in the construction of electrical motors and generators. Motors are used
in fans, pumps, mixer grinders and many other appliances. They are an important
component in speakers, headphones and microphones.

*Magnets (electromagnets) are used in electric bells

*Magnets are used in hard disks and compact disks to store data.

*They are used in credit cards, ATM cards and other swipe cards. The reverse sides of
these cards have a blank stripe or band. This stripe is made up of tiny magnetic particles
and stores information.

*MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanning is a medical technique used to form

images in the internal body parts

Extra question-

Q You are given a bar magnet whose poles are not marked. How will you locate the two
poles correctly?

A. When a bar magnet is freely suspended; it comes to rest in the north-south direction.
The end of the magnet that points towards the geographic north is called the north-
seeking pole or simply North pole of the magnet. The end of the magnet that points
towards the geographic south is called the south seeking pole or simply the South pole
of the magnet.

HOTS (Pg 159)

1. (A) Mr. Girish can find the needle easily by using a magnet. As the needle is made of
iron, it gets attracted to the magnet.

(B) Will be done in the textbook.

Repulsion: N – N

Attraction: S – N

(C) Though a pencil sharpener is made of plastic, it still gets attracted to a magnet as its
blade and screw are made of iron.

(D) A magnetic compass is better than a star to find directions as compasses can be used
anywhere and anytime. But a star cannot direct during daytime as it is visible only
during the night.

HOTS (Pg 157)

1. Yes, once the freely suspended bar magnet aligns in N-S direction, the geographical
east will be on the right side.

2.No magnetic compass will not show correct direction, as the compass needle gets
deflected because of either attraction or repulsion from the bar magnet.

3. No, it's not true as the earth’s magnetic power is widespread and weaker than a small
bar magnet.

Extra HOTS:

1. An iron strip gets magnetized whereas a plastic rod does not. Why?

A: A piece of iron has molecules which can be aligned in a particular direction due to
the influence of a magnet{ from south to north within a magnet } and north to south
outside the magnet hence it can be magnetized as it is magnetic substance where as
plastic is non magnetic substance hence it does not.

2. Suresh stored magnets with their similar poles beside each other and found they were
demagnetized. Why?

A: Magnets retain their magnet property when placed with opposite poles facing each
other so that they aren't demagnetized. Therefore when Suresh stored them with similar
poles facing each other they were found to be demagnetized.
