methanisation

Dr. Jean El Achkar

Methanization or anaerobic digestion

Anaerobic digestion allows the production of biogas that can be recovered in different forms.
The digestate produced, offers an alternative to mineral fertilizers whose synthesis consumes
energy and chemical resources.

Regulatory parameters and monitoring indicators

▪ Strict anaerobia

▪ Temperature: optimum of 37 ᵒC
▪ pH: around neutrality, between 6.5 and 8.5

▪ Alkalinity or (TAC, complete Alcalimetric Title), greater than 2 g eq. CaCO 3 · L -1

▪ Total Volatile Acidity or AVT, less than 2 g eq. CH 3 COOH · L -1

▪ AVT / TAC ratio less than 0.4; threshold value of the system inhibition

Conversion of organic matter to methane

During anaerobic digestion, the conversion of organic matter (OM) can be simplified according to

the following equation:

ed

• Part of the organic matter (OM) is used by the microorganisms (μ) to synthesize a
new biomass (n μ ).

• On the fraction of organic matter converted, 5 to 10% by weight is found in the form of biomass

microbial (the rest, therefore, in the form of biogas).

• The part of the non-biodegradable MO is named recalcitrant ( recalcitrant MO ).

• The biogas formed consists of combustible methane (50 to 75%), carbon dioxide (25 to 45%) and

different trace gases (NH 3 , H 2 S, CO, ...). 11

Pretreatments - Intensification of the process

Effects of pre-treatments on methane production measured by BMP tests: (A)

production of methane without pretreatment, (B) increase in methane production
after pretreatment and (C) acceleration of production kinetics after pretreatment.

methanation
Unlike methanation, which is a natural process, methanation is an industrial process.
The principle ? Carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide is reacted with hydrogen. it
allows to produce methane and water. This catalytic conversion operation is called "reaction
of Sabatier ".
