ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO. 1
Subject Name: Special Electrical Machines Subject Code: REE-064
Date of issue: --/--/2019 Date of Submission: --/--/2019
1. Define the following:
a) Stepping angle (b) Detent torque (c) Reluctance torque
2. a) What are the advantages of switched reluctance motor? b) What are the applications of stepper motor? 3. What is the step angle of a 4- phase stepper motor with 12 stator teeth and 3 rotor teeth? 4. Explain the construction and principle of operation of a switched reluctance motor. 5. A single- stack, eight phase (stator) multiple, stepper motor has six rotor teeth. The phases are excited one at a time. Determine (i) step size (ii) steps per revolution (iii) speed, if the excitation frequency is 120Hz. 6. Explain the phenomenon of static torque production in Switched Reluctance Motor. Also derive the expression for instantaneous torque developed by it. 7. Explain working, construction and control of a hybrid stepper motor. 8. What is step angle of a five-phase Switched Reluctance Motor having 10 stator poles and 4 rotor poles? What is the commutation frequency in each phase at a speed of 6000 rpm? 9. Explain Variable reluctance stepper motor with various applications. 10. Describe with appropriate sketch, a 2phase 8/4 pole permanent magnet stepping motor. For this motor determine the step angle and the excitation sequence of the 2 phase winding for clockwise an anticlockwise rotation of the rotor. 11. Explain working, construction and control of a Single-stack variable reluctance stepper motor. 12. Explain working, construction and control of a multi-stack variable reluctance stepper motor. 13. Explain the torque vs stepping rate characteristics of a stepper motor. What is slew range? 14. Describe an efficient uni-polar drive for stepper motor. 15. Enumerate the features that the drive circuit for a stepping motor should possess for optimum torque output. also describe the drive circuit used for VR and hybrid stepping motors. 16. Explain the construction and principle of operation of a switched reluctance motor. 17. Describe the inverter drive circuit used for switched reluctance motors. A three phase 6/8 VRM is running at a speed of 1000 rpm. Calculate the time between pulses required to excite the phase winding. 18. Explain the principle of operation of 6/4 pole variable reluctance stepper motor. What is the motor torque required to accelerate the initial load of 10 -4/gm2 from ω1=200 and ω2=300 rad/sec. Frictional load torque is 0.06 N-m.
