Relationship between guidance and counselling:

Guidance and counselling are like two sides of the same coin. They are quite often
used interchangeably, because they are inseparable. Guidance precedes counselling and paves
the way for it. All counselling is guidance, but all guidance is not counselling. Counselling is
the more specialised and individualised part of guidance. However,
 guidance is meant for all, everyone needs it whereas counselling is for those who have
problems and needs special assistance
 guidance is a general service and can be offered by anybody, for example: teachers,
parents, elders etc but counselling can be offered only by those who are trained in
counselling
 guidance can be offered publicly to a large group of people at a time, counselling is
private and can be offered to one person at a time
 scope of guidance is wider than counselling, but scope of counselling is deeper than
guidance
 Guidance is proactive but counselling is reactive.
 Guidance is the presentation of knowledge information and/or advice to individuals or
groups in a structured way so as to provide sufficient material upon which they may
base choices and decisions. Counselling may be described as the interaction
developing through the relationship between counsellor and person in a temporary
state of indecision, confusion or distress which helps that individual to make his own
decisions and choices, to resolve his confusion or cope with his distress in a
personally realistic and meaningful way.
 Guidance can be given in any normal setting whereas counselling requires special
settings that permit privacy and confidentiality besides other services such as testing
etc.
 Guidance is an integral part of education and assists in fulfilling in educational goals
whereas counselling is organized as a specialized service to deal with problem
situations faced by students.

Role of school counsellor in guidance programme:
