4.6.1 – Describe the advantages and importance of family or caregiver
involvement in learner development

When it comes to school, keeping everyone engaged can be a big struggle, but it is one

of the most important things that needs to be done in order to succeed and keep

students motivated. There are three main people that we need to talk about when it

comes to success in school, they are parents, teachers and students.

To start you need to have a system of how you are going to keep in touch with the

parents. There are many ways to do that such as newsletter, email, face to face, call or

paper copy. During my first placement I created a parent letter to send out and to let

them know what I would be doing and why I was there (2.1.1). I think this is so important

to do because if the parents are in the loop with what is happening in their child's

classroom then they can be more helpful in motivating their child in their school work.

Some positives to a student for if their parents are engaged are, they will feel more

supported. A way to make students know that they have a support system behind them

could be doing something like having a conference take place that includes their

parents and their teacher. During my year I had created a rubric for a student led

conference to take place (2.1.2), I think that having the conference be student led give

an advantage to the student because it will them them know that they have their
teachers and their parents that are willing to back them up and listen to them no matter

what. It could also build the students' confidence!

It will help out the teacher a lot if they know they have students in their classroom with

engaged parents because it will let them know that parents will be more open to talking

with them and could be less awkward for needing to talk through problems in the

classroom with parents. A teacher needs a support system of parents behind them

when teaching, it’ll help the teacher learn more about the student which then will lead to

being able to make accommodations or modifications for the student. Something I did to

demonstrate this was, I made a mok newsletter to send out to parents. In my newsletter

it gave them information like what the plan was for the week, what was coming up, what

students should study and what my contact information was if they needed to contact

me (2.1.3). A big first step to make parents comfortable is to reach out to them telling

them everything you have planned and how excited you are to have them this year.

In conclusion a big way to run a successful classroom is to keep everyone in the loop. It

will decrease discipline issues, give you more volunteers for your classroom and make

everyone more open to dealing with situations that occur!
