Q. From where do the Vedic Scriptures (Shruti – 4 Vedas & Smriti – 5th Veda) come?

Ans. From the Vedic Scriptures we learned that all the Vedic scriptures (Shruti & Smriti) are manifest from
the breathing of the Supreme Lord. Therefore, the Sastras are the eternal words of the Supreme Godhead.
Lord Brahma is the first living being, who directly learned the Vedic wisdom from the Lord within his heart.
asya mahato bhutasya nihsvasitam
etad yad rg-vedo yajur-vedah
sama vedo’ tharvangirasa
itihasah puranam ityadina
“O Maitreya, the Rg, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas as well as the Itihasas and the Puranas all
manifest from the breathing of the Lord.” --- (Shukla Yajurveda: Madhyandina-sruti, Brhad-
aranyaka Upanisad 2.4.10/4.5.11)
evam ime sarva veda nirmitah
sa-kalpah sa-rahasyah
sa-brahmanah sopanisatkah
setihasah sanvakhyatah sa-puranan
"In this way, all the Vedas were manifested along with the Kalpas, Rahasyas, Brahmanas, Upanisads,
Itihasas, Anvakhyatas and the Puranas." --- (Gopatha Brahmana, purva 2.10)
nama va rg-vedo yajur-vedah
sama-veda atharvanas
caturtha itihasa-purana
pancamo vedanam vedah
"Indeed, Rg, Yajur, Sama and Atharva are the names of the four Vedas. The Itihasas and Puranas
are the fifth Veda." --- [Sama Veda : Chandogya Upanisad (one of the 10 authentic Upanishads) 7.1.4 ]
sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo
mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca
vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham
"I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By
all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the
Vedas." --- (Sri Krishna, Bhagavad-Gita, 15.15)
tene brahma hṛdā ya ādi-kavaye
"It is He only who first imparted the Vedic knowledge unto the heart of Brahmājī, the original living
being." --- (Srimad-Bhagavatam, 1.1.1)
And through his (Brahma) four mouths the Vedic scriptures are emanated in this material world.
maitreya uvāca
ṛg-yajuḥ-sāmātharvākhyān
vedān pūrvādibhir mukhaiḥ
śāstram ijyāṁ stuti-stomaṁ
prāyaścittaṁ vyadhāt kramāt
"Maitreya said: Beginning from the front face of Brahmā, gradually the four Vedas — Ṛk, Yajur,
Sāma and Atharva — became manifest. Thereafter, Vedic hymns which had not been pronounced
before, priestly rituals, the subject matters of the recitation, and transcendental activities were all
established, one after another." --- (Srimad Bhagavatam, 3.12.37)
itihāsa-purāṇāni
pañcamaṁ vedam īśvaraḥ
sarvebhya eva vaktrebhyaḥ
sasṛje sarva-darśanaḥ
"Then he created the FIFTH VEDA — the Purāṇas and the histories — from all his mouths, since he
could see all the past, present and future." --- (Srimad Bhagavatam, 3.12.39)
