Background of the Study

The issue of increasing the minimum wage to improve unemployment has been studied

by different economist over the years. Increasing it will have negative and positive effect in the

industry and can even affect the whole country as well. The study will deal with the effects of

minimum wage to unemployment rate of fresh graduates in Metro Manila. Manila is one of the

cities in Philippines that provide better opportunity for individuals, who seek experience in their

chosen fields, and most of the best schools in Philippines are found in Metro Manila, but not all

college graduates in Metro Manila are employed due to different factors One of the factors that

an employee would look for in a company is the wage that will be given to him, and if he is not

satisfied with it, there is a tendency that he will find another job with a better offer, but high

paying jobs would require an employee to have more credentials and experience, which a fresh

graduate would not have by that time.

Minimum wage is the lowest wage allowed by the law given to all the employees and

workers in the country. It is designed to protect workers to unduly low pay in labor force.

Minimum wage is different in every region in the Philippines, currently; Metro Manila has the

highest minimum wage amounting up to P512.00 for non agricultural sectors and P475.00 for

agriculture, service and manufacturing sectors. However, although the minimum wage in Metro

Manila is the highest in the country, it’s still not sufficient to cover all the expense that a person

has in his daily life. Moreover, fresh college graduates expect that they will have a better offer

compare to other non-college graduate individuals, but other company only offer minimum wage

to fresh college students, which affects the unemployment rate in Manila. Unemployment is a

term used for those individual who seeks for a job but was unable to find one. High

unemployment rate would indicate inefficient economy, and would result in decreasing the GDP

of the country.
Research design

The researchers chose qualitative research design for this kind study, the purpose of this

qualitative research design is to provide more insights about the problem. The researchers are

tasked to ask questions related to the topic to chosen respondents, which are the fresh college

graduates in Metro Manila.. All of the response will be written in a descriptive manner.

Questionnaires will be given to the respondents; this will include questions that cannot

be merely answer by yes or no, explanation is needed to answer the questions in order to get

the perspective of the respondents about the issue. Respondents can also include suggestion

and concern about the issue, in this case, a better insight will be provided in the study.

Qualitative research design is flexible that’s why more issues can be open that is related to the

main problem. Online questionnaires are encouraged, since one on one interview will not be

possible due to the pandemic.

Population, Sample size and Sampling Technique

The target population will be the fresh graduates in Metro Manila. This includes

graduates from different profession and different school so that different perspective will be

observed. There are also different salary and wages offered to fresh college graduates based

on the degree they have finished and opportunities given based on the university they have

graduated. This will help the researchers to gather more opinion and concerns about the issue.

The entire fresh college graduates in Metro Manila would be difficult to monitor, that’s

why only part of population will be studied, and this is the sample size. Sample size will include

fresh college graduates from chosen different university, each graduate have different courses

from each other, and 50 fresh college graduates will be studied.

The sampling technique that will be use is the stratified sample technique. It is used

when the researchers expect that the measurement of outcome vary between different

subgroups. In this technique, the population is divided first into sub groups with similar

characteristics, for example in the study, the population will be divided first into, fresh college

BSA graduates, ABB graduates, BSCE graduates, BSMT graduates and so forth. This is to

ensure that each subgroup will have representation, and will reduce sampling bias.

Description of the Respondents

The respondents of the study will be the selected fresh college graduates in different

universities from Metro Manila. The researchers believe that the respondents have knowledge

and experience to answer all the questions that will be given to them.

The respondents are composed of different individuals; each came from different

universities with different courses to maximize the information that will get from them. The

researchers need at least 20 respondents and maximum of 50 respondents within Metro Manila

in order to gain information and improve their recommendations and solutions to solve the

problem.

Research Instrument

The research instrument that will be used in the study is based on the research design

that will be used as well. For qualitative research design, descriptive information is needed, so

questionnaires must be given to the respondents. Questionnaires will include questions

regarding the opinion and concerns of the respondents in minimum wage. There will be three

parts of questionnaires. The first part will be the personal information of the respondent, Name,

Age, Year graduated, course and school. The second part will include questions about the

concerns of the respondents; inclusions are subject but not limited to open ended questions, to

maximize the information needed. The last part of the questionnaire, is the suggestion part from
the respondents, as someone who is currently experiencing the effect of minimum wage to

unemployment, respondents can give ideas and suggestion as well.
