Places in the Community Lesson Plan

This lesson will focus on learning the terms for given places in the community and be able to
describe them as well as use them in a sentence. This lesson is extremely important as being able
to talk about where you want to go, where you are going, or where you have gone is a key part of
daily conversation. During this lesson we will begin with the basics by only going over a few
locations within the community (school, library, park, restaurant, etc.).

Since this lesson will be given to elementary school students, it is assumed that these students are
novice speakers of Spanish, but the majority of my lesson will be given in Spanish with hand
gestures and kinetics to help students understand what I’m saying. However, a few instructions
will be given in English just so that they are clear on what they need to do.

Level: novice/elementary school

Lesson length: 15-20 minutes
Objectives:
 Students will learn vocabulary for places in the city that they can recognize
 Students will be able to describe these places and what one does there
 Students will be able to distinguish between the places and tell which is their favorite and
why
 Students will play a game of memory and be able to remember which name goes with
which place
 As a group, students will play a game of “headbands” to describe and remember the
terms
 Students will be able to discuss where they will be going over the weekend
Exercises:
 Go over the vocabulary and talk about what you do in each place and which is their
favorite (3 minutes)
 Make flashcards for the memory game (3 minutes)
 Play the memory game (2 minutes)
 Compare results with peers (1 minute)
 Come back together as a class and talk about how we did (1 minute)
 Play the game headbands (5 minutes)
 Ask students what they will do this weekend and if they will visit any one of these places
(2 minutes)
Materials:
 Vocabulary visuals sheet
 Flashcards for memory
 Pencil/pens
Assessment:
 I will assess what the students know through the games of memory and headbands to see
if they are understanding and remembering the terms
 Students’ knowledge of Spanish will be formally assessed on an SOL at the end of the
year, which includes this kind of vocabulary
Methods:
 I will use mostly CLT to promote open conversation as a class but with me as the leader
of the conversation
o I think this method helps for best learning and my game of memory will add some
fun to it
 I will use kinesthetics when playing the headbands game, as students will have to hold
the card up to their heads
