    Turbines

    1. Purpose

    To inform users about a new design fire detector being used in current
    production gas turbines.

    2. Background/Discussion

    Based on a recent quality study, enhancements have been incorporated into


    current design fire detectors. These enhancements are designed to eliminate the
    most frequently occuring issues with existing detectors. The criteria used in the
    improvement process was Military Standard 202F (Humidity Test) which requires
    the detector to withstand a high humidity environment. The results have
    generated a detector which is hermetically sealed at the transition tube, which
    has been shown to extend the life of the device. Additional improvements were
    made in the accessory and load compartment areas by tailoring the set points to
    reflect actual compartment temperatures based on field studies. The new fire
    detector has been certified by UL, CSA and DEMKO.

    3. Recommendations

    At the next normal replacement interval the new design detectors should be
    installed. The user may also elect to install a fire detector with a lower setpoint
    which is now available, based on completion of a field study.
