SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY and SOCIETY

1.) How did social media affect you?

Social media affect me in many different ways. Not just me but also other people.
Social media is part our everyday lives. First is that I always paying attention to
my phone and sometimes it was a distraction for me because instead of reading
and studying I consumed all my time in facebook, twitter, and any other social
media sites. Second one is that I don’t have any interaction or time with my
family and friends because I always look on my phone and always scrolling up
and down through social media.

2.) According to the video, how did technology change?
*Privatization of technologies experience (vertical integration)Give examples.
*Effects on time space
*Effects on Being

Privatization happens when something huge is being compacted to what we call

“smartphones”. Before, we listen the music from our stereo with loud speakers
that everybody could hear it but we now have smartphone which we can carry on
our pockets nowadays and listen music on our own, download music on our own
choice of genre. Those individual items were compressed into a one smartphone
— radio, we don’t have to bring our heavy radio with us every day for us to listen
to it, library, alarm clock and so on. Telephone before was stand-alone but
because of smartphone, everything you need is compressed into one device. Even
if it could serve a lot of people, we still use it individually. From physical
immobility it turns into mobility, from social it became an individual access. Our
engagement to social media’s became 24/7, we became unproductive. The real
world also became alive 24/7 — call centers, gimmick places and so on, we can
now even call for food delivery in the middle of the night. Good thing about it is
that, you can chat or video call your family abroad and feel that all of you we’re
in the same time range. The world became smaller the moment we devote greater
time for social media. Above all the improvements and convenience technology
gives us, technology has made us more selfish and separate. Social network
become anti-social network, we have big friend lists but so many of us a friend
less. Measuring our self-worth by the number of our followers and likes, spending
greater time on facebook rather than having a conversation face-to-face. We
should take control and have control, let’s imagine a world where we smile when
we have low battery because that would mean one point closer to humanity.

3.) With the proliferation of social media/technology, do you agree with the idea of
individualism attached to it? Why?

Of course not, I don’t agree with the idea of individualism because social media
should have bondin with people together regardless of distance. It should not
make people feel afar from the persons whom they are with. If proliferation of
social media/technology will result to individualism, I think it is better to stop
using it. People need to have personal communication and attachment if they lose
that they can get weak. They won’t feel affection from others that will lead them
to depression. Everyone needs someone to be with so the idea of individualism
can’t cause any good to everyone.
