The Department of Education is set to conduct a simultaneous earthquake drill for all
schools nationwide to heighten the level of preparedness of the learners during an
earthquake.
Earthquake is one of the common disasters that caused peoples’ lives and
property. It cannot be detected when and where it would happen. This usually happens
in an ordinary and unexpected day where everyone is busy. Earthquake is understood
as a natural phenomenon caused by the constant movements of the earth’s crustal
plates and due to climate change too.
The drill started with the ceremonial pressing of the button where all the pupils
from Kinder to Grade Six together with the teachers followed the three important things
during an earthquake- duck, cover and hold to keep them safe. Before the actual drill,
the DRRM coordinator oriented the pupils during the flag ceremony. She also
disseminated the information about the occurrence of earthquake as well as the needs
to carry out a drill to enhance the pupils’ awareness on the safety measures during and
after the drill.
The second drill was conducted on June 20, 2019.the time recorded for the
participants to leave the building was 6 minutes before reaching the safe holding area.
After evacuating, the facilitator gave her evaluation on the said activity as well as the
thing to be improved.
