Salicylic Acid 0.5% (w/w) Gel

Presentation
Acnecare: Salicylic Acid is a keratolytic agent, derivative of benzoic acid containing Salicylic
Acid 0.5% w/w USP.
Pharmacological Properties
Salicylic Acid has been shown to produce desquamation of the horny layer of skin while not
effecting qualitative or quantitative changes in the structure of the viable epidermis. Peak
serum levels occurred within five hours of the topical application. The major metabolites are
salicyluric acid, salicylate glucuronides and free Salicylic Acid. Almost 95% of a single dose of
salicylate is excreted within 24 hours of its entrance into the extracellular space. 50-80% of
salicylate is bound to albumin.
Indications
Acne, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Hyperkeratosis, Tinea Versicolor, Viral Warts etc.
Dosage and Application
For Acne
Adults and children (>2 years) - Apply Salicylic Acid preparation 1–3 times daily. Initially, apply
once daily and then gradually increase to 2 or 3 times daily if necessary. If dryness or peeling
occurs, reduce application to once daily or every other day.
For Psoriasis
Adults and children (>2 years) - Use the gel one time a day.
For Common Warts
Adults and children (>2 years) - Use the gel one time a day.
How to Use
Cleanse and dry the affected area prior to topical application. Apply a thin layer of appropriate
salicylic acid preparation to affected areas.
Contraindications
Salicylic Acid should not be used in any patient known to be sensitive to Salicylic Acid or any
other ingredients. Salicylic Acid should not be used in children under 2 years of age.
Precautions
When using Salicylic Acid, do not use any of the following preparations on the same affected
area as Salicylic Acid, unless otherwise directed by your doctor
v Abrasive soaps or cleansers
v Alcohol-containing preparations
v Any other topical acne preparation or preparation containing a peeling agent
(for example benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, sulfur or tretinoin
v Cosmetics or soaps that dry the skin
v Other topical medicine for the skin
Salicylic Acid Gel is for external use only. Avoid getting Salicylic Acid Gel in the eyes, nose, or
mouth, on in the genitals. If contact with your eyes occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes. Do
not inhale the vapors of Salicylic Acid Gel.
Side Effects
Salicylic Acid does not have significant side effects. It is less irritating than benzoyl peroxide.
The most common side effect of salicylic Acid is mild skin dryness. If it causes mild irritation,
try to decrease the frequency of use. If irritation is severe or persists, even with infrequent
application, discontinue the use. Other side effects are peeling, red, or scaling skin, rash,
hives, itching, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue etc.
Drug Interactions
Salicylic Acid may interfere with Sulfonylureas, Methotrexate, Oral Anticoagulants,
Corticosteroids, Heparin, Pyrazinamide and Uricosuric Agents etc.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Salicylic Acid has been assigned to pregnancy category-C by the FDA. There are no
adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Salicylic Acid should be used during
pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. There are no data
on the excretion of salicylic acid into human milk.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool and dry place away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Commercial Pack
Acnecare: Each tube contains 10 gm gel. Each gm of gel contains 0.005 gm of Salicylic Acid USP.
