Taal Volcano(Bulkang Taal) is a large caldera filled by Taal lake on Luzon island in

the Philippines, and is in the province of Batangas. Taal Volcano is the second most active volcano
in the Philippines one of the country's 24 active volcanoes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology
and Seismology (Phivolcs) classifies Taal a complex volcano. There is 35 recorded historical
eruptions, all of which were concentrated on Volcano Island, near the middle of Taal Lake.

How big is Taal Volcano?

Taal Volcano has 47 crates and 4maars. The main crater lake, located on Volcano Island, is
1.9 kilometer in diameter, 4m above sea level, deepest point is 76m. The elevation of taal volcano
is 311m. The Taal caldera is largely filled by Lake Taal, whose 267 sq km surface lies only 3 m
above sea level. The maximum depth of the lake is 160 m, and contains several eruptive centers
submerged beneath the lake. All historic eruptions took place from the 5-km-wide volcanic island
in the northern-central part of the lake.

Why do Volcanoes erupt?

Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick flowing
substance called magma.
Volcanic eruptions happen when gas bubbles inside magma, or hot liquid rock, expand and cause
pressure to build up. This pressure pushes on weak spots in the earth's surface, or crust, causing
magma to exit the volcano. As the Magma rises, bubbles of gas form inside it. Runny magma
erupts through openings or vents in the earth’s crust before flowing onto its surface as lava. If
magma is thick gas bubbles cannot easily escape and pressure builds up as the magma rises. When
pressure is too much an explosive eruption can happen, which can be dangerous and destructive.

Past eruption:
The volcano has had several violent eruptions in the past, causing loss of life on the island
and the populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at about 6,000. Because
of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a Decade
Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters.
Taal volcano eruptions: 2020, 1977, 1976, 1970, 1969, 1968, 1967, 1966, 1965, 1911, 1904, 1903,
1885(?), 1878, 1874, 1873, 1842, 1825, 1808, 1790, 1754, 1749, 1731, 1729, 1716, 1715, 1709,
1707, 1645, 1641, 1635, 1634, 1609, 1591, 1572
Taal caused one of the worst volcano disasters in history: its eruption in 1911 killed 1334 people
and caused ash fall as far as Manila city.

43 years after the 1977 eruption, with the alert level of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology escalating from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 4. It was an eruption from the main crater
on Volcano Island. The eruption spewed ashes to Calabarzon, Metro Manila, some parts of Central
Luzon and Pangasinan in Ilocos Region, which cancelled classes, work schedules, and flights.
Ash falls and volcanic thunderstorms were reported, and forced evacuations were made. Dangers
of possible volcanic tsunami were also warned. The volcano produced volcanic lightning above its
crater with ash clouds.

Brgy. Banyaga in Agoncillo, Batangas on the shore of Taal Lake

sits covered in ash as Taal Volcano smolders nearby on January
15, 2020. The volcano's eruption on Sunday has caused thousands
of residents to evacuate the area.
