ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

Taal Volcano
Taal Volcano (Filipino: Bulkang Taal) is a large caldera filled
by Taal Lake on Luzon island in the Philippines, and is in the province
of Batangas. Taal Volcano is the second most active volcano in the
Philippines, with 35 recorded historical eruptions, all of which were
concentrated on Volcano Island, near the middle of Taal Lake.

The caldera was formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and

5,380 BP. Viewed from the Tagaytay Ridge in Cavite, Taal Volcano and
Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines. It is located about 50
kilometres (31 miles) south of the capital of the country, the city of Manila.

Elevation: 0.311 km
MAIN CRATER LAKE - 1.9 km in diameter; blue-green in color, 4 m above sea level, deepest point: 76m

The Taal caldera is largely filled by Lake Taal, whose 267 sq km

surface lies only 3 m above sea level. The maximum depth of the
lake is 160 m, and contains several eruptive centers submerged
beneath the lake. All historic eruptions took place from the 5-km-
wide volcanic island in the northern-central part of the lake

Latest eruption = January 12, 2020 (ongoing)

A total of 75 earthquakes have occurred in the Taal region (Magnitude 4.6 quake hits Mabini, Batangas,
epicenter was located 4 kilometers south of Mabini)

Volcanic ash consists of tiny jagged particles of rock and natural glass blasted into the air by a volcano. Ash
can threaten the health of people and livestock, pose a hazard to flying jet aircraft, damage electronics
and machinery, and interrupt power generation and telecommunications
With the ashfall, the Department of Health (DOH) is bracing for a possible surge in respiratory and eye
illnesses
3 Taal evacuees dies in batangas

The volcano has had several violent eruptions in the past, causing loss of life on the island and the
populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at about 6,000. Because of its
proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a Decade Volcano,
worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters.

Taal caused one of the worst volcano disasters in history: its eruption in 1911 killed 1334 people and
caused ash fall as far as Manila city.

Buildings that can withstand volcanoes?

A house on stilts of titanium or tungsten might survive, if the stilts were strong enough to withstand the
lava pushing against them.

How to neutralize a volcano?

There is a research in nasa that could possibly be stop a volcano
But would take 16000 years to finish, 3.5 billion dollars of budget and could also trigger the volcano to
erupt in the process.
