The griot translated back for the elder, who spoke, before allowing the griot to turn again:
“The elder has heard you and accepts these gifts with many thanks. He is glad to know that the route to the North is re-
opened; truly, long has been the time since the last merchant came here.
Brave Sundyula, you have to know however that here too, the flow of gold is running low from the South. A new threat
has emerged in the deep, dark forests that lie yonder. Not the ancient lizards from the Age of dawn, that have always
been there and that we know how to avoid, but something more sinister. The people talk of cruel slavers, demons and
djinns, dead that rise from the grave and slithering, poisonous critters in damp places, and of a dark tower covered with
the bones of sacrificed victims. They too mine for gold, it is said they sell it to the foreigners who come from over the sea.
Really, we beg our Father, the King of Kings, he whose armies cover all the land, to send his best scouts and spies to that
place to investigate and find the best way to counter that new menace.”
From: Sundyula and the Pygmies, a Griot’s song
҉Ѭ҉
Oduwa told Sundyula: “Mysterious is that part of the jungle, filthy, giant animals are found there and nowhere else.
Nobody lives there, except some evil sorcerers, the Bokono, and whole tribes of evil Pygmies. The Bokono, they used to
live among us. Many moons ago, after sacrificing as usual to the Spider Altar, their secret call was addressed, and they
saw the Mother of All Spiders coming to them. Mangangezula, the lead priest, did not move and was bitten. He was not
eaten alive, instead he followed the spider. Ever since, more and more priests followed the Spider. Mangangezula lived
ever since, but he is not the same anymore. He talks no more, he ages no more. He and the Bokonos live now with the
Pygmies. They come to the village once every ten years, and we chase them with stones.”
Oduwa pursued: “The Pygmies require that our tribe gives them every month ten adult slaves. This is the price for us not
to be killed. We are not afraid of the Pygmies. We are afraid of the return of the Asanbosam. The Asanbosam are not a
tale for children. They exist. They live in the jungle bordering the sea. They are allied with evil Pygmies.
We know why the next village is empty. They failed once to provide the slaves.”
Oduwa explained: “Once, four slaves managed to escape. We recaptured them in the evening. We tied them on a tree in
the middle of the village. And we abandoned it. Only I remained, hidden. The next morning, our village was attacked by
three cannibals and three zombies. I could recognize the slaves, despite the deformities. The cannibals… they were
turned into feral beasts. Drooling mouth, thick lips, red eyes. They searched the whole village for human meat, until they
discovered the slaves hanging from the tree. But it were the zombies who climbed and took the slaves from the tree. The
village was spared. Normally, zombies cannot climb. These were surprisingly agile. Because they were fresh.”
Oduwa clarified: “We are normally well protected. The Orisha are our spirits. They are our protectors. They are good for
us. But some of the Orisha are dangerous, if not properly appeased. The Pygmies, they used to work for us. They escaped.
They stole some of our Orisha. The most dangerous ones. And they perverted the rituals.”

Precedence
The first unit among Baron Samdi and Wicked Twins to appear in the Army List has the Precedence. If a Baron Samdi
has the Precedence, all Wicked Twins are Offended. If a Wicked Twins has the Precedence, all Baron Samdi are
Offended. Offended units have their Dis set to 1 and may never borrow the Dis of the General.
Spirits can be very touchy about who has precedence. Especially the most powerful ones. Respect the protocol!
Autonomous
Undead units consisting entirely of models with Autonomous may perform March Moves as normal, even when
outside the range of friendly models' Commanding Presence. The unit must still pass a Discipline Test in order to do
so if within 8" of non-Fleeing enemy units.
Special Attacks
Reaper
A unit consisting entirely of models of which at least one model part has Reaper ignores all other units when moving
in the Movement Phase, but it must follow the Unit Spacing rule at the end of its move.
The unit can make a Sweeping Attack. The enemy unit suffers 1 hit with Strength 5, Armour Penetration 10, and
Magical Attacks for each model with Reaper in the unit.
Attack Attributes
Vampiric (X): Close Combat and Attacks & Weapons.
At the end of each Melee Phase, check and resolve the following effects for all units and Characters with Vampiric:
• Characters: If at least one attack with Vampiric made by the Character caused an unsaved wound, the
Character can make a single Vampiric roll. If successful, the Character Recovers a single Health Point.
• Units: If at least one attack with Vampiric made by a R&F model in the unit caused an unsaved wound, the
unit can make a single Vampiric roll. If successful, the unit Raises a single Health Point.
A Vampiric roll is successful if the D6 scores X+ (where X is the number stated within brackets). Use only the best
value if a unit or Character has multiple parts with this Attack Attribute that each caused unsaved wounds. A roll of
'1' on a Vampiric roll is always a failure and a '6' is always a success. Models with Towering Presence suffer a -2
modifier to their Vampiric rolls.
Armour
War Mask
Pygmies only. Hard cover protecting the head. Counts as Heavy Armour and may be enchanted as such.
H Eternal Rest Can Wait When resolving the spell, choose one of the following effects
for each target (only for models with the Undead rule):
(4+) (18”) - The R&F part of the target Raises 2D6 Health Points
rep {7+} {6” Aura} Augment Instant - One Character Recovers one Health Point.
{{10+}} {{12” Aura}}
Vampiric Bloodlines
The Vampires in a Vôdun Vampire Army may choose to represent a single Vampiric Bloodline. If the Army represents
a Vampiric Bloodline, all Ancient Vampires and Elder Vampires must take the upgrade that corresponds to that
Bloodline. Unless noted otherwise, all rules associated with a Vampire are only applied to the model part that takes
the upgrade and do not apply to any mounts.
Blood Ties
Certain unit entries in this Army Book include the term Blood Ties, followed by the name of a Bloodline in brackets. If
the Army includes at least one Ancient Vampire or Elder Vampire matching the Bloodline written in brackets in a
unit entry, this unit gains access to the associated Blood Ties upgrade.
Blood Powers
Ancient Vampires and Elder Vampires may purchase a unique upgrade called Vampiric Blood Power. In an army
without a Bloodline (called an Independent Army), all Blood Powers are 0-1 per Army. However, in an army with a
Bloodline (called Bloodline Army), only that Bloodline's powers can be taken, though these powers can be duplicated
within the army unless noted otherwise.
Among the many dangerous beings living in the forest, one is the Asanbosam, which attacks the unwary hunter. It looks
like a hairy man, with blood-shot eyes, iron teeth, and iron hooks replacing its feet and pointing both ways. It hangs
head down from branches, like bats, attacking by surprise from above. It feeds on men, but not on Pygmies.
Very few men dare to live in that forest. Those who do are the Bokono sorcerers. They worship giant spiders, of which
they have developed some traits. They are rumored to devour children and maids.
Blood Powers:
Flying Horror (75 pts) - Models on foot only.
The Vampire gains Fly (7”, 14”) and Storm of Wings (see Great Bat).
Ancient Blood Power: High Priest of the Spider Cult (70 pts)
Must mount a Spider Statue, which increases its Base to 100x150mm and gains Undead and Towering Presence. All
models in enemy units within 6” of the model suffer -2 Agility and -2 Defensive Skill.
Blood Powers:
Paralysis Bite (80 pts)
Any model suffering from an unsaved wound inflicted by this Character sees its Adv and Mar value halved (round
up) and sees its Defensive Skill and Offensive Skill set to 1 until the end of the game. If the model belongs to the
category Cavalry, specify if the Rider or the Mount suffers from the effect.

The slaves were awoken, and pushed towards the center of the village, next to the altar. The Vôdun Priest examined each
of them closely. Some were spared and brought back to their cages. The remaining ones were forced to drink the content
of a gourd, and fell asleep. Once they were sleeping, one by one, they were brought on the altar, where a blade took their
life away, in fountains of blood.
After all had been killed, the Vôdun Priest came next to the corpses, and ordered them to stand up. They did. After what,
nobody ever seemed concerned about watching them anymore.

The next morning, those who had been spared were brought back. In a quick ceremony, one of the young Pygmies cut
slightly his arm and their arms, pushing wound on wound, mixing their blood. Then they were given long leaves to chew,
before they were allowed to drink. Soon, their eyes turned red, their nostrils enlarged, their mouth doubled volume, their
hands and arms open up, grabbing the air frantically. They were looking strangely at the Pygmies, showing an obvious
impulse to devour them, but the young participant to the ceremony showed them the wound on his arm and told them:
Taboo!

The large Spider Statue, named Humfo, was made of ebony wood, with tiny inclusions of a very heavy metal which
glowed in the dark and sometimes, burned the wood, causing slight fumes. This was where sacrifices were made.
Background (II)
҉Ѭ҉
The statue towered over the sacrifice that the Pygmies had brought before it. It was once beautifully carved but untold
eons had stripped its details. Every distinct feature was gone. Except the eyes, which contained crimson ruby pupils,
radiating pure madness. A steady stream of blood oozed out of its screaming mouth into a large pool set in front of the
statue.
A dark, indecipherable inscription was written in sharp cuts on the base of the Vampire God statue. Strangely, when
looking at it, Sundyula heard these words whispered from an edge of his mind, in the very tongue of his mother:
"That is not dead which can tell eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die."
From: Sundyula and the Pygmies, a Griot’s song
҉Ѭ҉
Sundyula had found the source of the gold, and could go back home. As he departed, he had a premonition and looked
behind him. At the edge of the woods, the silhouette of a Pygmy vanished in a glimpse. Suddenly, Oduwa came out of the
wood, running towards him. No Pygmy seemed to pursue him, despite Sundyula could feel their evil yellow eyes staring
at them. Strangely, Oduwa’s running feet were making no noise, and there was no shade running under his body.
Sundyula took his weapon, a superb mahogany marquetry imported from al-Hisn. He had one last remaining Darkstone
Shot. He aimed and shot. Oduwa fell. Sundyula came close, and looked at the wound. No blood was bleeding. The body
had no odor. A fresh bite was visible on the neck. Something horrible had happened during that night in the forest.
From: Sundyula and the Pygmies, a Griot’s song
҉Ѭ҉
The diaries of the old civilization of Naptesh mention that 2600 years before present time, Pharaoh Neco II sent a
nautical expedition around the continent of Taphria. The flottilla came back after four years, proving Taphria to be an
isolated continent. The expedition was in very bad shape: most of the crew had died, the surviving ones did not last more
than a month.
In the deep forest, they had captured many strange unknown animals. Most of them were too feral to be kept alive and
only their skin was brought back. Among the animals still alive, some resembled tall, muscular dark skinned Humans,
were it not for the sharp fangs, the clawed feet and the disturbing lack of body odor. They did not look afraid.
They manage to escape, with the help of one of their jailer who seemed to have been subjugated.
