EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN, DATA

PROCESSING AND EVALUATION

CRASHING METEORITES (CRITERION B AND C)

A student interested in meteorites decided to

study “how the angle of impact with the
surface affects the size of the crater left by a
marble”. The setup (see diagram) uses a toy
gun attached to a rod that can be adjusted to
different heights to get the different angles for
the study. The gun is set so it always hits the
same point when the marble is shot. The surface
is cleaned and prepared again after each impact.
She shoots the gun 3 times for every angle and
measures the crater.
1. Complete the following table about the
variables of this experiment:

Name Possible method to measure it or control it.

Independent Angle of the toy Use a protractor to measure the angle at which
gun when the the toy gun is positioned in.
marble is shot

Dependent Size of crater

Control 1 Shape, size and

mass of marble

Control 2 Point of impact

Control 3

2. Write down an experimental method (procedure) for this experiment based on the
description given. Use numbered steps and clear instructions.

3. The following is the data collected by the student in the experiment. Complete the
table by calculating the averages for each angle used. ROUND ALL YOUR
ANSWERS TO TWO DECIMAL PLACES. Use Excel and paste your processed data
in the “average” column.

DIAMETER OF THE CRATER (cm)

ANGLE
(degrees)
Try 1 Try 2 Try 3 AVERAGE
22 0.85 0.84 0.83

35 0.89 0.85 0.86

43 0.90 0.90 0.92

56 0.91 0.90 0.95

63 1.02 0.90 0.92

73 0.90 0.99 0.97

4. Suggest a reason why the student decided to have 3 trials for each one of the angles she
used.

5. In Excel, plot the DEPENDENT vs INDEPENDENT variables. Paste your graph here
and make sure it has all the necessary elements.

6. Making reference to your graph, conclude what can be said about the research
problem the student wrote: “how the angle of impact with the surface affects the size
of the crater left by the marble on the clay surface”

7. When designing the experiment, the student wrote the following hypothesis:
“If the impact angle of the marble on the clay is bigger, then the diameter of the crater
on the surface will remain the same”
Referring to the data of the experiment or the graph you produced, evaluate the
validity of this hypothesis.

8. Suggest an explanation for the results of the experiment (assume that there were no
errors in the measurements so they are all valid)

9. Read again the description of the experiment and look at the diagram to suggest one
possible limitation that you identify in the procedure (something that could make the
results unreliable). Explain how the identified limitation could have affected the
experiment and suggest a way to solve it.
