CP RC2 User Manual

2 Introduction
2.1 Designated use
The CP RC2 is designated for performing high-voltage tests on GIS. The testing system consists of the
CP TR7 providing galvanic separation, the CP AT1 to boost the input voltage for the CPC 100, the
CP CR6 to compensate the reactive power, and the power voltage transformer (PVT). The power VT is
part of the GIS and not provided by OMICRON. The power VT is an enhanced voltage transformer and
designed to withstand the needed test current on the secondary winding.
NOTICE
Damage to the device under test possible
► It has to be guaranteed that the windings of the voltage transformer can withstand the needed test
current.

The busbars, the breakers, the disconnectors, the CTs and VTs inside a GIS represent capacitive load
on the high-voltage side of the voltage transformer which is transformed to the low-voltage side by the
square of the turns ratio. Without compensating this reactive power, the CPC 100 is not able to deliver
the needed total power. The CP RC2 and the capacitive load build a parallel resonance circuit. To get
the exact resonance point, the test frequency is tuned to resonance.
The CP AT1 can also be used as power source for the CPC 100.

2.2 CP TR7
The CP TR7 provides galvanic separation of the booster output of the CPC 100 for resonance circuiting
with the GIS. With a ratio of 1:1 and an inductivity of 7 mH, capacitive loads can be compensated.

3 Operation
This chapter provides a general description of the CP AT1 and the measurement setup. Furthermore, it
gives an overview of the compensation ranges for different connection versions of the CP TR7 and
CP CR6 as well as an instruction on how to set up. Moreover, the HV Resonance Test System test card
of the CPC 100 to perform the high-voltage measurement is described (see 3.4 on page 22).
As already mentioned earlier in this manual, different connection versions are possible and/or required,
depending on the load. All possible connection versions are described below.
WARNING
Death or severe injury caused by high voltage or current possible
► Use only designated connection options to prevent a life risk!

3.1 General
Independent of the connection option used, the following measurement connections have to be
provided:
1. For current measurement on the power VT’s input, connect the current transformer delivered in the
package.
2. Press the Emergency Stop button on the CPC 100 front panel. Continue with connecting only if the
green status light is on.
3. Connect terminals k (S1) and l (S2) to the I AC input of the CPC 100.
4. For voltage measurement, connect the aa and nn terminals of the power VT (low-voltage side) to the
V1 AC input on the CPC 100. If this is not possible, the Measurement connections A and B of the
CP TR7 can be used instead.
5. Connect the Y-cable always in the described manner to avoid overheating of cable and terminals
during the HV test.
6. In all connection options, all elements of the setup have to be grounded using the equipotential
ground connection. For this purpose, use the grounding cables delivered in the package.
7. Connect the EXT. BOOSTER output of the CPC 100 to the BOOSTER INPUT of the CP TR7 with
the booster cable.
WARNING
Death or severe injury caused by high voltage or current possible
► Do not connect a reactor in serial with the CP TR7 output. Dangerous voltages can be
generated!

12 OMICRON
Operation

3.2 Use of the CP AT1

Connect the voltage input connector of the CP AT1 to the 3-phase (3x230 V) mains power supply. The
output connector must be connected to the CPC 100 mains supply with the cable delivered.
Put the voltage tap switch on the 100% position and switch on the device.
Now, the CPC 100 will be supplied with a voltage of 262 V – depending on the real voltage supplied to
the CP AT1. To verify the actual input voltage for the CPC 100 you can check the voltage on the two V
sockets on the CP AT1 front panel with a voltmeter.
Depending on the main level variation it might be necessary to decrease or increase the output voltage
of the CP AT1 to ensure the maximum power output for the CPC 100. This can be easily done by
switching the voltage tap either down to 97% or up to 103 or 106%.
In general, the CP AT1 reduces the input current for the CPC 100 to a maximum of 16 A due to the
increased input voltage of the CPC 100.

4.2 Preparation
► Short-circuit low-voltage terminals of non-used phases of the power voltage transformer.
Note: Short-circuit the low-voltage terminals of the non-used phases! This is important since coupling
between the phases will result in voltage induction in the non-tested phases. Thus, the test voltage from
phase to phase cannot be reached.

4.3 Measurement of the leakage reactance

This procedure is only required, if no direct measurement on the high-voltage side is possible, for
example, due to a second VT or voltage divider.
► Provide the measurement setup as shown in Figure 4-3 below and make sure to short-circuit the
high-voltage side of the voltage transformer.

The load on the primary (high-voltage) side of the voltage transformer is almost capacitive.
Simplified electrical equivalent circuit of the voltage transformer under load:
ΔU
Is
Xsc
Us U'p C'

Figure 4-5: Electrical equivalent circuit of the voltage transformer under load

The voltage on the secondary (low-voltage) side and the primary (high-voltage) side have the following
correlation:

U s = ΔU + U' p = I s ⋅ jX sc + U' p (Eq. 4-1)

where

Us = input voltage (voltage of the low-voltage side of the VT)

Is = input current
U'p = voltage on the high-voltage side of the VT referred to the secondary low-voltage side
ΔU = voltage drop due to capacitive load
Xsc = leakage reactance of the VT

The output voltage U'p is larger than the input voltage Us. This is caused by the losses of the leakage
reactance.

Figure 4-6: Influence of the capacitive load

If the voltage Us is used for determining the voltage Up on the high-voltage side, ΔU has to be
considered. To calculate ΔU, the current Is and the leakage reactance Xsc have to be known.

6.2 Compensation Ranges

Table 6-2 shows the possible compensation ranges. The indicated capacitances refer to the low-voltage
side of the VT. In order to calculate the maximum capacitance on the high-voltage side, the ratio of the
VT has to be considered.
Example: Ratio of the VT = 110 kV:100 V, C (HV side) = 1 nF:
C (LV side) = 1 nF x (110,000/100)2 = 1210 μF
