Grade 7 Science
Lab Activity # _____
Measuring Physical Quantities

I. Measuring and Unit Conversion

Materials:
Objects to measure – science books, yellow pad paper, Zesto (juice) box
Tools for measurement – graphing paper, ruler, tape measure

Procedure:
a) Use the different tools to measure your science book, yellow pad paper, and juice box.
For graphing paper, 1 box is equal to 1 mm
For ruler, use the cm units
For measuring tape, use the cm units

b) Measure the length (l), height (h), and width (w) of the object. If the measurement is too small (like the
width) put “Not Applicable (N/A)” in table 1.

c) Record your measurements in 2 significant figures in table 1.

d) Convert all your measurements from table 1 into meters (m). Write the new conversion in table 2.

II. Measuring Time

Materials:
Stopwatch
Plastic bottle
An improvised inclined plane

Procedure:
a) On an improvised inclined plane, mark the starting line and the finish line.
b) From the higher end of the inclined plane, release the plastic bottle such that it will roll down the
inclined plane.
c) Measure the total time in seconds (s) from the starting line up to the finish line through (a) manual
counting, and (b) stopwatch/timer.
d) Record your measurements in 3 significant figures on table 3.
e) Repeat the steps three times for Trial 1 (T 1), trial 2 (T2) and trial 3 (T3). Compute for the average
time using the formula below
T 1 +T 2+ T 3
average time=
3

f) After the whole activity, collect the average time from the other groups. Record the data on table 4.
