Skill 5: Test A Timer Relay
Skill 5: Test A Timer Relay
Skill 5: Test A Timer Relay
Procedure Overview
In this procedure, you will test and operation of a timer relay with out-of-
circuit testing procedures. To do this, you will insert faults into the relay coil
and contacts using the FaultPro Computer-Based Fault Insertion Software.

NOTE
Just like control relays, some timer relays use a coil to control the contacts.
The coil on this type of timer can be tested for continuity. However, the 990-
MC1F Timer Relay uses a transistor device to control its contacts. It is not
practical to test the transistor device out of circuit.
9. Perform the following substeps to insert a fault into the timer relay in the
single fault mode and test it.
A. Type 11 in the Enter Fault Field and press Enter to activate Fault 11.
Fault 11 is an open in the timed N.C. contacts of the timer relay.
B. Again measure the resistance of the timed N.C. contacts terminals 15 to
16.
Resistance:
NOTE
Many timer relays have a manual override (just like standard relays) that
allow you to test the contacts without applying power to the coil. However, the
multifunction timer used on the 990-MC1F has no manual override. Therefore,
you must apply power to the coil to check whether the contacts properly
function.
D. Set the time delay for 1 second and set the mode for on-delay (A).
E. Remove the lockout/tagout from the circuit breaker.
F. Turn on the circuit breaker.
This will apply power to the timer coil. After the 1 second delay, the
contact should change states.
G. Again measure the resistance of the timed N.C. contact terminals 15 to 16.
Resistance:
Timed N.C. Contacts (15 to 16) __________________________ (Ohms)
Contact Status ____________________________________ (Good/Bad)
This time you should again measure infinite resistance. This indicates that the
contact is open and is bad. It did not switch states after the timer timed out.
H. Turn off the circuit breaker.
I. Disconnect the timer coil from DC power.
10. Click the Clear Fault button to clear the fault.
11. Click the Exit button to leave the Single Fault Mode.
12. Exit the FaultPro software.
13. If this is your last activity of the day, return the lockout/tagout equipment to
your instructor. If not, continue.
