DEADLY DECISION
Police and road safety experts have slammed “ignorant
and selfish” drivers after a spike in high-range alcohol
readings in the past three months. Officers found 56
Northern Tasmanians drunk behind the wheel, with some
blowing as high as five and six times over the legal limit.

ROSEMARY ARMITAGE
Sad reality of youth within justice system
I
WONDER how many people have heard
of the Independent Person register with
Tasmania Police.
This is an extremely important and
personally fulfilling community service that
can be undertaken by the average person to
assist Tasmania Police in their daily duties.
There is a daytime roster and a night
time roster, as crime happens any time, and
the average time at the station would be
between 30 minutes and an hour.
Obviously sometimes it is less and on
occasion I have been there for a couple of
hours.
It all depends on the crimes and whether
someone is charged and bailed to re-appear.
Videoing interviews and statements,
taking photographs and fingerprints etc. all
take time, but are essential and I couldn't
hazard a guess how many video interviews I
have appeared in.
I have been an independent person for
over 20 years and never cease to be amazed
at the young people who fall foul of the
system and get themselves into strife.
As an independent person the duty is to
be an independent adult observer in police
interviews of young people.
My understanding is that police policy
requires an adult, parent or guardian
present during an interview to ensure that
statements are made freely without threat
or coercion and that no claims can be made Former Tasmania Police Commander Glenn Frame giving Rosemary Armitage a recognition certificate for her work with the

HE definition of insanity is doing
the same thing over and over again
and expecting a different result.
These are the words of Albert
Einstein.
And truer words could not be applied to
the ongoing attitude far too many Tasmani-
ans have towards alcohol and driving.
Every single person knows the risk associ-
ated with drinking alcohol and choosing to
get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
The minor risk is getting caught - you will
be embarrassed, you will lose some money,
have court costs and even risk jail time
depending on your record.
But it's all too late getting caught after
you've hit a pedestrian, slammed into a tree
or hit another car.
Some people have to live with the loss of
a best mate or the fact they killed a stranger
simply because they chose to drink and
drive.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR These messages are not new. The dangers
remain frighteningly real.
