3.0 PRELIMINARY MEMBER SIZES

Preliminary member sizes determining is initial design of the members and specimen

calculations to determine sizes of a slab panel, beam and a column are shown below. First floor

of the apartment building (Parking Level) is selected for specimen calculations and selected

elements are shown in the below drawing for easy reference.

BS 8110- SLABS
01:1985 Consider the slab panel shown in Figure 3.1 above.
Table 3.4 & For durability requirements :Assume mild exposure
3.5 condition ,
Nominal cover required is 25 mm

For fire requirements : Assume 2 hour fire resistance

Nominal cover required is 25 mm.

Hence selected cover is 25 mm. Cover is

ly = 7975 mm
l x = 4590 mm
ly 7975
  1.74  2
lx 4590
Hence slab panel is two way spanning slab.

IstructE Span / Effective Depth = 40

Manual Hence, Effective depth = 4590 / 40 = 115 mm

Table.3.0 Assume T 10 bars are provided as main reinforcements,

Hence slab thickness is = 115 + 10/2 + 25 = 145 mm Slab
Thickness
Hence slab thickness is selected as 150 mm. 150 mm

BS 8110- Consider span (C-E) on Grid (10)
01:1985 For durability requirements :Assume mild exposure
Table 3.4 & condition ,
3.5 Nominal cover required is 25 mm

For fire requirements : Assume 2 hour fire resistance

Nominal cover required is 30 mm
Cover is
Hence selected cover is 30 mm. 30 mm

IstructE For continuous beams,

Manual Span / Effective depth = 15
Table.4.0 Span of the beam = 9625 mm
Hence, Effective depth = 9625 / 15 = 642 mm
Assume T 25 bars are provided as main reinforcements and
T 10 for shear links,
Hence beam depth is = 642 + 30 + 10 + 25/2 mm
= 694.5 mm
Hence select a 750 mm deep beam.

Breadth of the beam is governing the practical consideration

of simply fitting all the reinforcement in to the section while
avoiding the congestion.

Minimum possible spacing while assuming beam is provided

3T25 bars in a layer,
Minimum width = 2(30+10) + 2(hagg + 5) + (3x25)
= 205 mm Beam Size
Selected beam width is 300 mm. 300 x 750
Hence beam section is 300 x 750 mm. mm

COLUMNS
Consider column type C3 as shown in Figure 3.1. This
column is subjected to loaded from 10 Apartment floor
levels, Pool, Garden floor level, MEP slab level(machine
room) and Roof slab level.

Ultimate load on apartment floor slabs can be calculated as

follows.

Assume 150 mm thick slab,

Self weight of the slab = 0.15 x 24 = 3.6 kN/m2
Finishes = 2.0 kN/m2
Total dead load (gk) = 3.6+2+1 = 6.6 kN/m2
Imposed load (qk) = 2.0 kN/m2
Hence design load = 1.4 Gk+1.6Qk
= 12.44 kN/m2

Ultimate load on pool and roof garden floor slab can be

found as follows.

Assume 150 mm thick slab,

Self weight of the slab = 0.15 x 24 = 3.6 kN/m2
Finishes = 2.5 kN/m2
Services = 0.5 kN/m2
Total dead load (Gk) = 6.6 kN/m2
Live load = 3.0 kN/m2
Total imposed load (Qk) = 3.0 kN/m2
Hence design load = 1.4 Gk+1.6Qk
= 14.04 kN/m2

W. D. S. H. Dissanayaka(AM-9183) CHAPTER 3 – PRELIMINARY MEMBER SIZES

Ultimate load on MEP floor level (machine room) can be

calculated as follows.

Assume 250 mm thick slab,

Self weight of the slab = 0.25 x 24 = 6.0 kN/m2
Finishes = 1.5 kN/m2
Total dead load (Gk) = 6.0+1.5 = 7.5 kN/m2
Live load = 3.0 kN/m2
Total imposed load (Qk) = 3.0 kN/m2
Hence design load = 1.4 Gk+1.6Qk
= 15.3 kN/m2

Ultimate load on roof slab floor level can be found as

follows.

Assume 175 mm thick slab,

Self weight of the slab = 0.175 x 24 = 4.2 kN/m2
Finishes = 2.5 kN/m2
Total dead load (Gk) = 4.2+2.5 = 6.7 kN/m2
Total imposed load (Qk) = 1.5 kN/m2
Hence design load = 1.4 Gk+1.6Qk
= 11.78 kN/m2

Tributary area for loading on column C 3 = 3.956 x 2.772

= 10.97 m2
Hence Ultimate load on the column
= [(10x12.44) + 14.04 + 15.03 + 11.78] x 10.97
kN
= 1815.75 kN
(Reduction in total distributed imposed floor loads with
IstructE number of stories is not considered.)
Manual To compensate the effects of eccentricity ultimate load is
Clause 3.7.4 multiplied by 1.25
Hence design load on column = 1815.75 x1.25 = 2269.69kN.
