Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in
all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.
☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): My activity is for students to participate in a lesson using the software
BrainPop on either a computer or tablet. The students will watch a tutorial video geared towards the lesson at

hand. The video has multiple visual aids for students so it is engaging. After the students participate in
watching the video they then will transition into an activity. Then after completing the activity and video they
will take a quiz where teachers can receive the grade and best determine what is next.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will review the topic of addition and subtraction and certain
properties I will make sure all students have base understanding of this before distributing technology for
BrainPop. After covering this students will be provided technology to access BrainPop. Students will receive a
tutorial and over by the teacher to make sure they know how to access the website and participate properly.
Once they understand that they will begin their work on the technology. The teacher will circuit the room to
answer any questions that the kids have. After they finish their work on BrainPop questions will be displayed
on the smart board where the teacher can take a formative survey of what they learned during the lesson.
After the class has answered these I will review the scores from BrainPop to see where the students need to
improve or exceed in.
Reflective Practice:
I think this would be a fun lesson for students to engage in. Having the students use BrainPop will allow them
to take a break from “Standard Learning” to engage in a fun online learning. I feel as if students will look at
this lesson as if it wasn’t school work but more fun. This would be very beneficial to teachers as well because
the students will enjoy it. The teachers will also benefit from this due to the fact that all the scores are in one
place and they can get a good review on how they are doing.
